Yes, ABF accepted unnecessary concessions. Seven percent. I'm unsure of the pay rate there currently, but it wouldn't be a good place to be a new hire anymore due to the "red circle" language the union allowed. That lets the outside contractors run ABF's freight regardless of whether those new hires are sitting at home starving. Not a good situation currently.

Yep. It blew my mind the first time I saw a Werner truck pulling an ABF set.

The other bad thing for new hires is the vacation deal. They work 2 years before they earn 1 week? I got fronted 2 weeks immediately when I started at Dayton.

Yes. Two years before you get a week of vacation. But one year before you're at 100 percent of the pay scale, so...if all you want to do is work, have at it!

And yeah. The loss of image, having carriers like Werner pull their trailers... that's just unspeakable and unconscionable. Judy McReynolds...well, we know what the deal is. She's been in a Con-Way mood for some years now.

Not sure what part of the country you are in, but in Louisvile it is peak season year round now for UPS. They have brokers pulling trailers almost year round since they have so much volume. When they open the new ground hub (that supposedly rivals CACH in size) in a year or so it is supposed to eventually add 300 feeder jobs. Someone looking to relocate to Ky with a good work record could possibly hire in off the street at a great time.

You have to marry up a pay grade or two or send them to school so one day they make more than you. That way if she decided to leave she will be paying alimony to her "poor" ex husband truck driver! Lol.

A coworker of mine who used to work for Walmart said he heard 20 of their drivers left to work there in Louisville. Walmart drivers are leaving in droves for UPS and LTL jobs.

It never really slows down here. I've missed maybe...ten days worth of work since I got hired, and that includes January and February, when they told me to expect to work one or two days a week. It never slowed down that much at all.

You are a smart man! When I met my wife she worked at the Ford plant when times were kind of iffy for that plant. She took the buyout and went to nursing school and became an RN. She recently went in to medical procedure related sales and now with bonuses she is thankfully passing my income.

It's not a bad deal, having an ambitious wife. We'll come out of this lull making 250-300k by the time we're 39 or 40. Which is neat.
