2 things I learned over time I like to share with others.....
(Spot freight for the 1-3 truck guys)
    1.Don't Book Anything on Mondays
    2.Dont book anything before 1pm

I can go into detail why if needed

DO NOT follow suit like most of america like to do

Have your sat and sun off with a good night sleep on Sunday and Think at 7am Monday Morning your getting any money- You Won't-

Try running your operation Sunday thru Thursday- Then Load up on Friday for (Just a few hours) for a Monday delivery

You have Waaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyy too many people follow suit of Saturday and Sunday OFF-Then after Chelsea and Caitlin go to school I'll Book Freight Monday Morning.

Agree completely. But the only thing I'd add for clarification purposes is if im getting 700, add in the 25% for my carrier and it means the customer is paying almost a grand on that short hop.

This is spot on. When i work local Monday and Tuesday is my weekend. Wed through friday i hump then reload Friday afternoon for that Monday morning delivery, get home before lunch and enjoy the next two days goofing off before repeating the process.

I can tell you though, that there are a lot more shippers who schlep off the short runs for $500 or less. I have one in particular I work with where this was common practice. I had to beat it through her skull that you're paying for time more than mileage on those short lanes. She used to come back to me frequently when her other brokers went in too dirty, and couldn't get the job done.

I usually book my Monday load on the previous friday. Otherwise, i may not reload on monday because the spot rates on mondays are usually low. The good rates on Mondays usually are posted around 7am to 8:15am Eastern Time. After the early postings, rates are posted low because the loads that have to be move already been booked. I will only book a monday load on friday if the rates are close to the rates on fridays. Usually, thursdays and fridays rates are higher in the week.

I keep track of weekly rates on many areas and get to know the spot market rates before deciding to take a load there. In markets like the northeast, Denver, MN, Florida, and many other areas, I have to factor in a day wasted in deadhead into the rates. I need to average $1,000 a day on days away from home. I do not look at rates per mile but instead look at rates per day. To me, a 100 loaded mile run and a 500 loaded mile run takes all day so i need to average $1000 for both. I may settle for a little less on the 100 mile run because i use less fuel but not by much. But i rarely do 500 loaded mile for $1000. A 700 to 1100 loaded mile load is going to take me 2 days to complete, so i will need atleast $2000 for them. If this same load goes to a bad area that waste a day in deadhead, then I need an additional $1000 on the rate to get my daily average. This is why my rates to the north east from the Carolina needs to be close to $3000 because it takes 1 to 2 days to complete, and waste another day to reposition my truck to a better area since i refuse to do cheap freight.

This is always the dumbest subject. So if freight coming out of Denver was paying $3.50 a mile do you think that same load you had going in would’ve paid $3.35.then.Ive never even had anyone define what cheap freight is.What loads one can make money another may not there are so many different variables to each different load sometimes yes deadheading is right sometimes not..Some will say dh 600 miles to get a load paying $2.50 a mile for 700 miles but forget to ad in that 600 mile dh as if it was free miles

This is very subjective and it varies from person to person. I know on average Freight coming out of Denver barely pays over a dollar per mile for legal flatbed. Because of that I always add 300 mile deadhead charge to Freight going into there which is where I usually come out with $3.50 or more per mile. Typically when I make the drive out of there I already have another load lined up in Kansas get me back to a hot freight Lane. Out of Kansas I can usually the average $2.25/mi. This makes it worthwhile to eat the fuel cost to get there to go to real Freight. This time I ended up picking up a load weighing 5000 lb paying $2.09 a mile. And because of it my next load that I'm about to pick up pace $3.20 in mile. The other half of the equation is I refuse to support cheap Freight. To me anything less than $2 a mile is cheap Freight and I will do my best to never pull it unless there are some serious extenuating circumstances.

$200 in the West will get you to better freight. Even less back east.

So $2 a mile is good and $1.99 is cheap?
