Suppose a driver was on a 34-hour re-start away from home. Can the driver leave the loaded trailer at a truck stop and check-in to a motel about 8 miles from the truck stop? Or are drivers expected to "guard" their trucks and loads on re-starts?

I’ve stayed at a motel several times. But not while loaded. I stayed across the street.

It is quite possible to find hotels with truck parking. Super 8 is one chain I tend to look for. When I feel the urge to get out of the truck for a reset this is the way I go, loaded or not.
It is also not uncommon to find hotels right next door to a truck stop.Need4Speed and driverdriver Thank this. -

The truck (and load) is driver responsibility, with-in reason. This means using caution where you park and locking it when you walk away. You are allowed to stay in a motel on your off time, however you are still responsible for the truck and load. So, using common sense, you wouldn't park the truck with a high value load, and head for motel 6 8 mi away, right ?

It's nice when you can find a truck stop that's near a hotel. That way you can end at the truck stop one evening, start the reset clock, stay in the truck the first night (to save money) then walk over and check in at the hotel as soon [as they will let you] and finish your break there.
Doing full resets in a truck is something I just don't care to do if there's any way I can avoid it. I find the idea that some truckers are "too good" to sleep in hotel beds laughable, but whatever.Need4Speed Thanks this. -
If you're driving for a company that's giving you loads with enough time to take a reset, you probably don't need a reset.

The answer is the same as when. You take your 10 hour break.
Off duty us off duty!
What you do is up to you. While off duty your not "supposed" to have any work related duties ie; security guard.
But in the real world. The answer depends on company policy, and where your leaving the equipment.Need4Speed Thanks this.
