Are the job opportunities really out there?

That is tempting. I’m not afraid of manual labor and 70k will be more than I have ever made in my life by far.

 

Is it local route stuff with McLane or are those guys still delivering nationwide?

 

local/regional, McLane has contracts all over the nation and drivers assigned everywhere. So does Reinhart Foodservice and Sygma Network. They all hire drivers with only a cdl permit.
Personally, I wouldn't do it. Dealing with stores and dummy store managers & employees just isn't worth the hassle.
Labatt Foodservice has the same program. They hire new cdl grads and cdl permit holders. They're more regional; just run Texas and New Mexico.

 

Good for you, ten trucks here... But I own mine.

 

I read a book about trucking a few weeks ago and it said grocery store disto centers and stores are the worst. It said they are notoriously slow stubborn and disorganized. Lol

Really? I have never heard that before... Always a good experience on my end, in and out, give or take 8 to 20 hours...

 

We all do the type of driving we prefer. Some want to be home every day, some want regional and some of us like coast to coast in a nice sleeper truck. The best job I had was tankers, but I also really liked long haul reefers because lots of night driving and long hauls. The schedules were tight and I liked the discipline it takes to adjust to that. Hardheaded; "Don't tell me I can't be in Seattle,WA tuesday morning at 3am!"

I like that type of driving, with a thermos of hot coffee and XM radio. Not for everyone, but some of us thrive on that.

 

I tried that also, believe it or not. Only did it because I needed to be home more at the time to take care of business. Fleming Foods, Associated Grocers. Could hardly wait to get back on the road.

 

That’s exactly what I want! I’m nocturnal and pretty much a hermit. Want to get a truck and set it up as my home away from home. Hot coffee, xm radio, driving in pajama bottoms, and books on tape! That’s good livin

 

Yep, agree! You'd probably do well with companies such as Freymiller, Contract Freighters, Navajo Express and a few others; maybe FFE (Frozen Food Express). Freymiller has the "Restore Program" for new cdl grads. They also have their own radio station & the app. is on www.drive4freymiller.com
Contract Freighters seems like one of the best dry van outfits and does really long runs coast to coast.
