I am a degenerate (cigarette) smoker and a chain smoker when I get tired. I also enjoy a decent cigar from time to time. Are there rules about smoking (obviously fuel tankers are an issue) on a government level? Any non-smoking companies out there?

Any trainers have feelings on smoking? If you don't, and your student wanted too, how is that handled?

    *cough* Thank you

A reputable co will try to place non smokers with non smoker trainers. In the event if you get a non smoker trainer maybe he will let you smoke when he is fueling and other times you can when you are not in the truck. I am a non smoker, but most drivers tend to smoke.

No government rules that I know about...............

It's your trainers truck, if he says no smoking, you don't smoke.

That pretty much sums it up.

When I was in training back in 1999, I had to fire my first trainer. The second trainer they found for me was a non-smoker, and I was/am a smoker. When he was asked about that issue, his response was 'Does she have a sense of humor?' He had no issue with it, but he was an exception to the norm! I learned a lot from that guy too.

I requested a non-smoking trainer, but didn't get one. I stuck it out for little more than a week without #####'n before I bailed out. This was a factor in my decision. I didn't say anything to my trainer about it, but when we swung through the terminal, I did mention to it to someone in the office when she asked me about it. When we got back on the road, my trainer told me that she had mentioned it to him and he cut back, but not very much. I just kinda sized up the situation and tried to cope. I doubted that they would have been able to pair me with a non-smoker and didn't want to bare the consequence of asking him to change. I don't think anything would have really worked in that situation and just took the hit. Just an unwinable situation overall. I hope some will have better luck. Smoking is unhealthy, sometimes kills, and honestly shouldn't have to be tolerated by those who object. Then the reality sets in. What rights do we really have? Someone posted, " If they say no smoking, you don't smoke..." but what if they do...? Then what do we do...?

They teamed you up witha guy trainer? Am I correct in assuming your female?

The only reason I asked is cause of the horror stories I've heard.

And if you flip that coin?

Yes, they did team me up with a male trainer, and you are right, I am a female. I was OK with it as long as they chose well. Neither trainer made me feel uncomfortable in that way. The first trainer was just one that had no business training anyone. He was a walking disaster. Female trainers were pretty thin on the ground back in 1999.

Had I felt uncomfortable at anytime, I would have been removing myself from the truck and calling my SDM immediately as per the arrangement we had when I agreed to go with a male trainer if they did not have a female trainer available.

I have heard some of those horror stories too. I was a bit leary about it at first, but I figured I always had a tire thumper near by, and even though I'm not very big, I am a scrappy little thing. Grew up with two brothers in a neighborhood full of boys - I learned how to fight dirty if need be!

I actually met quite a few good guys out on the road. Most of them treated me and talked to me like I was their sister/daughter. I did not get chummy by any means, but I actually felt pretty well looked after out there. I don't know if it's the same now, as I haven't been out there in 8 years.
