Can anyone tell me if you can skip gears while upshifting in a 13 speed?
Like going from 2nd to 4th, for example.
    I've done it in a 10 speed.
But I tried it twice tonight, for the first time, and it didn't wanna go in.

Never done that in a 10 speed. But with a 13 speed just go through the gears til 8th gear hit the red button forward shift into 13 and be done with it.

I only do it when I'm empty. There's never a light load. I'm either empty or 80k. But if I start in second, I'll skip to fourth, then to sixth, then eighth, then flip the red.

Do you have to ride out the gear longer? For example, shifting from 2nd to 4th... do I need to ride out 2nd longer than I normally would to get my road speed up to go into 4th?

I hit every low gear (1st thru 4th) empty or loaded. In high range I might skip the first 2 when I’m empty, but I hit every single one if I’m loaded.

    I don't. I shift at 1100 rpms when empty.

You should be able to shift a 13 speed skipping gears up and down. Is a little harder in the low range but once you get to 5th gear you should not have any problem. In fact, when going uphill and loaded heavy I find it a lot easier to downshift by skipping gears.

I've got a 18 and ONLY gears I skip while being empty is 1st 2nd....

While being loaded heavy I hit every #### gear and I like it..

Only time I would skip all my half gears and lower range is when I bobtail.

Downshifting skip as many as you want.

Loaded is the key word. Don't skip anything coming up.

You will discover you can almost pick any gear coming down in the box provided you have the engine below red line when you get into it.

13's are superior to 10's and 15's and 18's provide more options as well. You are not just a 10 speed drone at these kinds of trucks anymore. These transmissions like to be loaded heavy which is why they have so many gears.

With that said, there is a little bit of skpping going on now and then depending on what the truck feels like doing while taking off downhill. You literally do not have the time to go through every gear, it will quickly use it up in a blink of a eye and have to shift again. That's make work.

Your tach is key to shifting. There is a torque speed and a high horse speed such as 1250 to 1650 for a modern detroit. As long you down shift at 1250 you will hit perfect the next one down, as well as up at 1650.

Maybe we should have autos in every truck with the brain drain of knowledge or... perhaps lack of training a new generation of truckers...

A 13 speed is not a 10 speed that you split the high range, it is a 9 speed. If you are trying to skip gears in the low range, you would need to wait just a little longer than you would in a 10. Once again, just because it has more gears, doesn't mean the ratios in low range aren't further apart than a 10 speed, which may make skipping a gear much harder.
