No broker with more than a dollar per mile in the load is trying to pay 84 cpm. Better to move the load at a smaller profit, keep the customer happy, and be on to the next one.
The reality is that I know exactly 0 people who make a living off this type of freight. These sorts of customers usually are paying these types of rates direct to trucking companies. They pay 0 extra for the broker, so he ends up trying to take his (pitiful) end out of the truck. It doesn't work very well.
I 100% guarantee all 10 of 'top 10 brokerage profit loads W900 has hauled' paid what you considered to be very reasonable rates. Nobody goes out and gets the customer to overpay dramatically and then goes cheap on the truck. That's comically stupid. The higher the margin on the load the more desperately I want it to go right. Show me a load where I made more than a thousand bucks in gross profit (I probably do 10 or so a year... always nice when it happens!) and I'll show you a load where the carrier was pretty happy with the rate. I wasn't risking my commission on some weak carrier to try to squeeze out an extra 100-200 bucks lol.
EDIT: Actually there's one exception. I got a random one off load earlier this year with a credit card customer. Anyway I gave them an off the cuff quote that ended up being massively high. It was like 1 pallet going 500 miles to a major market. I found a hotshot to move it for 800 bucks and they were pleased as heck about it. Then because of some error in our TMS the default switched from 'carrier rate confirmation' to 'customer rate confirmation' I sent the carrier the customers paperwork... which said I was getting 2k. They went from very happy to very butthurt in about 5 seconds. They tried to sign the customer copy and claim that we had agreed to 2k. It got very weird.
But they would have been super happy with the absolutely outstanding freight they had gotten off of me if they didn't know I was making a KILLING on it. I ended up paying them exactly what we agreed to and I'm not even a little bit regretful. I went out and found that customer and I only got to move one load with them. (not because I did anything wrong, but because they just don't ship much) Was actually massively not worth it for me.

That's why i think 99% of hotshot operators are a joke. 800 bucks on 500 mikes is absolutely awful, that doesn't even hit my daily minimum for across town local work. The only way thats an acceptable rate its of its coming out of a dead area and towards rewards a good area.
Note: i do not fault you or any other broker for trying to make a good profit on a load, i do the exact same.W900AOwner Thanks this. -
800 for 1 pallet if it really is fast pick and drop and on your route and you can fit it with your full load.... why not? I don't know I would jeopardize a tl of produce being late, but I bet a lot of dry van not so time sensitive would grab it.

I used to do it when I was a company guy sometimes. Boss had trucks that run between yard and where 1 skid delivered so I'd drop at yard someone else would deliver it. That way if it's too long on loading just tell them to keep it.

Now for the next several years that driver will always talk about that #### broker that made 60% on one pallet - and of course you guys do that on every load by default, right? Lol..
