Hope I'm not stepping on any toes by posting this, but I was in Louisiana Machinery (our local Cat dealer). Parts manager had a reman 70 pin ecm for a C 15 sitting in an open box, ticket was on top the ecm. After questioning him about it, he showed me the ticket- $1255.00 before tax, and NOT flashed. Service Manager was not in, so I couldn't get a price of a flash. I was told by the parts manager that if you went in with the serial # of a stock 6NZ, it would not be a problem to flash a reman to that #. Next stop was the local International truck dealer, which is also a very competetive Cat parts dealer. The shop foreman there is also the main "computer guy". He basically told me the same thing, and added that the last time he checked, a new Cat C15 ecm was about $300.00 more than a reman. He stated about two hours shop time to flash a new or reman.
Another thing he added is that Cat is getting harder to deal with, as far as uprates, etc. If I brought in my 475 hp, 1650ft C15, they would not allow him to flash it to a "generic" 1850ft engine. They want the serial #, then will write a program for that specific motor, cost for the program = $500.00-1500.00, + the shop time to install the program. According to the shop manager, Cat said "if you want more power, you'll have to pay for it".
I didn't ask if this was Cat's position, or Louisiana Machinery's position, (I think LA machinery and one other company own all the Cat franchises in LA., sort of a monoply)

    Hello sleepless nights-
I spoke to someone at the above mentioned Midwest diesel sometime back, before you and I had talked, and he quoted me $600.00 for a used ecm. The only guaranty was that it could be re-programed. Very nice fellow, I'd have to look in my notes for his name. He said the way they bought the ecms, (bulk), they had no knowledge as to what they were formerly programed to, and if I would buy from him, to count on having to re-flash. I'm pretty sure the $600.00 was with an exchange, but he also recommended that I keep my old ecm "just in case".

That is correct, reman ecms are about $1400 can but you have to return a 70 pin ecm as a core or pay an addional $400. If you walk in to a Cat dealer with a reman or new ecm and want it flashed to a certain serial number, lets use 6nz 99999 as an example. The dealer could flash the new ecm to what ever hp that serial number came with and the fuel numbers installed by the factory. Now when you change ecm serial number ( ever ecm has an internal serial number) Cat see's that 6nz99999 now has a different internal serial number and logs that in there system. If the person you got the serial number 6nz99999 from goes to the dealer and needs factory passwords, the tech will enter his ecm internal serial number and Cat will see the conflict. I do not know what they do with this issue, or if they just will not supply passwords to the original 6nz99999 ecm do to its no invalid. Also if you go to any Cat dealer, The cat et software is connected right to Cat. When they do a download for the workorder, the down load is sent directly to the Cat. If you have played with you ecm, stay away from Cat authorized dealers Cat ET. I think the most that they can do is void any warranty ot goodwill at time of failure. But who knows, maybe they report to EPA with owner information?????

What if somebody wants to uprate hp or torq or both and they are not on warranty anymore? does cat still want a premium for that if they don't have to warrant it?

Based on what the shop foreman at the International dealer told me, that is correct. He also stated they would not let him up the torque on my truck, if my tranny was a 1650 (it is) even though it is out of warranty. This MAY have been a dealer stipulation, but I want to say it came from CAT.

    DDS -
My tire size changed on my truck, from 22.5 lo pro to 24.5 standard height. Do you know if this would affect my ecm other than the speedo?
55 mph on the speedo is actually 60mph.
If I brought my truck to say, a KW dealer to get the speedo corrected, would they notice if my ecm had been modified? Would the CAT computer automatically attempt to re-program?
