I was taught by my trainer that when a weigh station is ‘OPEN’, you go in if you get a red light on your beepy thingy, and you can pass it if you get a green light.
How come sometimes it doesn’t beep at all?
I’ve come up on a few stations that are ‘OPEN’ but I don’t get a beep, and I was told to just go in if I don’t get a beep...
And once I got a green beep super late and I was already pulling in to the exit ramp for the station.
If I see a ‘OPEN’ weight station, should I go in if I don’t get any beep?
And that brings me to my next question about the bypass lane inside the weight station...
Can you always use the bypass lane (around the scale) if you’re empty?
How do they know you’re actually empty?
Could one just use the bypass lane when loaded and no one would even know?
I’ve seen a bypass lane posted at 35 mph, and I saw one at another station that wasn’t posted at all...
What is the normal speed limit for the bypass lane? And if it’s isnt posted can I just go the posted speed at the entrance of the weight station?
Sorry, that’s a lot of questions.
Thanks in advance.

Not being a buster, okay?
READ the signs. If anything your trainer should have done was instruct you on the signs. He didn’t do it. He failed.
If it is a Prepass site, there will be a sign saying so. If the scale is open and your prepass doesn’t go green, you go in. If they have a sign telling you to bypass the scale, yet your prepass blinks red, go into the scale. Prepass trumps the electronic messages. OPEN and CLOSED sign trumps all.
All the scales have a posted speed limit sign.Grubby, MACK E-6, stayinback and 3 others Thank this. -
This happens to me pretty regularly. That's why it's always important for new guys to have a trucker GPS that will inform you when weigh stations are approaching and to look for the physical sign indicator whether it's open or not. If open and no prepass signal, go in.
But you also need to be aware they can sometimes be Closed but you get a Red signal on prepass. Point is to try and keep yourself in a position to see what the sign says.
But be advised. I can tell you Garmin's aren't 100% accurate about all scales locations. I'm not sure about Rand McNally.Lepton1 Thanks this. -
Depends on what kind of day you want, if no signal on prepass act like you were called in and do the rodeo, if you have a box they can not see into if empty and there is no scale on bypass lane hit the scale and if you are doing the bypass lane they have a posted speed limit, go a little bit slower and look hard everywhere, people are walking around. If you try to get around those in that coop and they catch you they can make your day very bad, if you play the game nicely you back on the road in a few minutes.

My trainer is new to the game so it’s like the blind leading the blind. I can tell he doesn’t really know the rules with the weigh stations, which is why I’m asking here.
So once I go into the weight station there is another sign that’ll tell me to use the bypass or use the scale?
It’s hard to notice everything since I’m so focused on my driving.Trucker61016, austinmike, TripleSix and 1 other person Thank this. -
some of them scales are that little plate in the road before you even hit the weigh station, like in Nebraska, they get a close idea of your weight before you even are flagged into the station. Some states will use a loud speaker to guide you so have the window down a bit and listen. It is pretty much just get in line, do not do anything to get noticed, then get on out.

HazMat you go in, green or not.. most times you will get the bypass lane..

My state isn’t listed on that pamphlet you attached, so it looks like I’ll just follow the lights in the weigh station. -
