Hello everyone. I work for an ltl company here in the south and i was suspended today until further notice. I worked for another ltl company previous to this one for about a year in linehaul, I quit there and got out of trucking for about a year and then decided to return to it. I applied to a new company as a P&D driver and its been rough to say the least. Theres 4 main points here and the last 2 are the most important.
1) After only 2 days of riding with another driver they sent me out on my own because they were short handed that week (week of thanksgiving). The company policy is that you must ride with another driver for 5 days before you can go out on your own. I wanted to help out since they were short handed so I decided to do it. I made some mistakes of course, I had 3 bills for a customer but accidentally only delivered 2 of the bills. when I returned the guy there told me it was to late for me to deliver what was on the 3rd bill (which was 6 pallets). This caused me to not have enough space for a pickup that my company needed. Also i saw they closed soon and tried to call my dispatcher (who was busy) so I made the decision to just come back to the terminal (wrong decision). So I get back to the terminal and my manager is a little disapointed in me, but i get an empty trailer and head an hour back to the customer to get the pickup and i thought all was good. It was a bit of a hectic day but I did my best. I had a sit down with the terminal manager the next day and he was telling me how he was displeased with my performance from the day before. I explained to him what happened but I think he already had his mind made up about me.
2) I was riding with another driver on an out of town route. He was a nice guy but a bit of a stickler. My terminal manager asked him at the end of the day how I did. He told them that I had a slow pace and that I asked him to drive the truck at the end of the day. I asked him to drive because he seemed a bit annoyed with how I drove. I haven't drove a 10 speed in awhile so i was a bit rusty. I've rode with 3 other drivers that did not give me a review like this and even after this I really paid attention to my speed. Well I sit down with both terminal managers the next day and again they tell me how they are displeased with my performance. I told them that I would pick up my speed and wouldn't ask anyone else to drive again.
3) Now this is where things get bad. I'm driving with another driver and the day is going pretty well. We made about 12 deliveries and our last delivery is a residential. He called the customer to see if they were home and they didn't answer. I asked him if we should still do the delivery? It's only a 37 pound tool box and were pulling a 40 foot lift gate trailer. It would be better if they come meet us somewhere instead of trying to navigate through this neighborhood. He said yea lets just do it. So hes telling me which streets to go down and turn on, and I'm feeling like #### this is not a good place to be at in a truck. I'm in 5th gear, trying to pay attention the best I can and I end up hitting a low tree with my trailer on the right side of the street and there is a truck parked on the left side of the street. I damaged the trailer pretty bad. I had to call safety and have a phone meeting with them the next day. The safety guy was pretty cool about it and said he would write it down as a preventable and that was that.
4) Ok now this one was 2 days ago. I had another driver riding with me and cut too close to a dumpster and it scraped the side of the trailer and left 2 holes in it. I reported it to safety and came into the terminal yesterday and sat down with my terminal managers again. They told me my driving is not good enough to be a P&D driver there and that maybe I could work the dock part time if they could find a spot for me. So they told me I was suspended until further notice pending the investigation of my accidents. He also brought up points 1 and 2 to factor in the situation which I didn't think was fair because point 1 I didn't have to do because I haven't rode with someone for 5 days yet and point 2, I only had a bad review from 1 driver and I was improving on those said points. I know 2 accidents within a weeks time looks bad, but I feel pretty bad about potentially being fired before I even receive my uniforms. I was pretty stressed out after points 1 and 2, which may have been a factor in both my accidents, and now im really stressed that I'm about to lose my job.
Now I'm just looking for advice on what to do? Should I call someone in corporate to see if they can save my job? Or should I just let it go and try somewhere else? I really do like the company, I'd like to stay there. I'm open for any criticism, comments or questions. thank you
Suspended/possibly fired, need advice (P&D)

Sounds like they should be starting new drivers off on a slower pace. Usually when people are doing things faster then they feel comfortable is when stuff goes wrong
Woodys, misterG, road_runner and 4 others Thank this. -
Your Probably a Younger guy- Just starting out in life- Probably a Wife or Girlfriend a kid or 2-
Wife/Girl probably said "Want you home every night/day"
You Had your opportunities, you haven't got enough experience to do P&D yet,
Time to get some good experience-Find a TRUCKLOAD regional or Longhaul carrier- Work there a few years STEADY ..take your Time,Dont be in a Rush,EVER......
yeah,You'll be sleeping in a truck and you'll be paid by the mile or percentage and your benefits will be just so-so..
But, Its where your gonna have to be- You had your chance- Your tore up too much stuff AND made bad decisions on Reconsignments and brought deliveries back to the barn.
Your Girl will understand (If she truly loves you)..........THEN,After a few years of uninterrupted Road Work with no Claims or issues- You can apply for cartage companies like Old Dominion-Estes,Yellow Roadway- USF Holland, If you so Choose.
I see it all the time- Young Kids ar 22 years ols get a CDL- Then think they're gonna get $28.32 per hour right away and home by 3;30 pm with uniforms.....Not in trucking your not.
Pay your dues first with experience- Then, You may Work Local with a Timeclock and Free insurancedarthanubis, bentstrider83, Mike2633 and 3 others Thank this. -

I have to agree, more experience is needed. P&D is not a good place to start... Then throw in the Egg Timer (ELD), and it may just be a career ending decision to stay. Which I doubt they will let you do, I would start looking for other work.

Don't call corporate or the terminal manager will fire you for going over his head.
You're probably going to be fired anyway. You have 2 preventables plus the failed delivery, so that's not good.
Do you live in Austin,Texas?Last edited: Dec 8, 2017

How was the previous driving job? Maybe go back to that one to get more experience? Did you leave in good terms? Like the others, me thinks you're still green behind the ears. 2 accidents in one week is too much. By the way where in the south?
joshuapowell61 and darthanubis Thank this. -
TransAm gives drivers a 2nd chance and they have a Texas regional position that has a guarantee of $900 weekly minimum. "No more than two preventables" so you're right on the edge, but hirable. If this job interests you, don't call first; do the online application, then call and say, "I'm checking on my job application."
Your driving record is probably clean if there were no police called or tickets issued. Future employers will probably still find out about the 2 preventables though, but the MVR still will look good to them.
Qualification Requirements
- Class A CDL
- Excellent driving record
- Minimum 21 years old
- No DUI convictions in the last two years
- No more than two preventable accidents in the last 36 months
- DOT physical and drug screen required

Several accidents is too many too fast, one key word by safety, Preventable.
Screwing up a delivery is not that good as you already know. I wonder how you would do on a week long LTL delivery with 30 stops and 48 pallets stacked in trailer?
As the others stated, you seem to be a bit young. And I will reinforce the overall thought that when you RUSH around, you get into problems really fast.
Never be in a rush. Once you do in your mind, I bet the farm something bad will happen and it will be BAD. I had a suit yell at me once long ago to move my truck NOW and get that stuff (Cement in bulk tanker) into his plant. I destroyed another truck's hood that was nose to tail with me unloading. It was a stupid thing to be in a rush and still waited until he was done to boot.
Never ask someone already driving to take the truck, it's a bad thing to do. You have a LIFETIME to do all the driving there is. Don't be in such a rush.
You probably will be let go. It seems every time you show up in the office someone is not happy with you and for pretty good reason.
One more thing, next time something comes up, go or no go? with a big truck stay right where you are, however long that takes until you get instruction from dispatcher, that is why they are paid to do what they do.joshuapowell61, darthanubis, Mike2633 and 1 other person Thank this. -
Chinatown Thanks this.
