Hello to all of you, I've been away from Canada for 16 years living in Taiwan as an ESL Teacher. My daughter just moved back to Canada for University. So now I have no reason to stay in Taiwan. I went to Taiwan for a vacation but had a little, too much fun and ended up having a child with a Taiwanese woman..
Even know I never got married, I just couldn't leave Taiwan without seeing my daughter grow up. So I took a job as an English Teacher. and decided to stay. As I said in the above description I'm 52 years of age.
I did drive a truck with an AMZ licence through Nesel Fast Freight Inc out of Caledon, Ontario for one year and a driving service for another year.
Unfortunately I was down graded to an MD licence [Motorcycle straight Truck] Because I couldn't do my physical every year. I'm still in Taiwan but now I want to be closer to my daughter. As a father she means everything to me. So I'm hoping I can start over again. But I'm afraid to leave Taiwan because \
A: I'm very old and
b: I only have about 25 thousand to start over.
The cost of living in Taiwan is very cheap and I'm sure it's very expensive in Canada now. Also I worry because I haven't drove a car in Canada for a long time. I'm afraid that I won't be able to get into a school or even get a job.
I apologize for the long post. I hope that there are a few on this message board that can lead me in the right direction, Or someone who might know that I can contact.
Thank you Sincerely.
Old Driver but been out of Driving for 16 years , My age is 52. is this too old [Need advice please]

Sorry just to add if this helps?
Never been in any Truck accident or had any tickets. -
MY state, after 90 days of an expired DOT, we are screwed to do it ALL OVER again.
BS i say, i'd rather go do something else. -
by the way, i always click on "new posts", not knowing right away, what board it is for.
hopefully a canadian driver can be of more help.
good luck to you -
`Thank you for your input, I don't mind going back to school. I thought about paying 8-9 thousand for a good school. I just don't know if that's enough money for a good school now a days.
But like I said I've been in Taiwan for 16 years. I'm hoping that someone will know what is a good Driving school in Ontario. The first time I went to truck driving school was 18 years ago and that school wasn't very good.
It was call Toronto truck Driving school.
I did get a job with Nesel Fast Freight, The only thing was that I had to rent the Driving school's Truck to show Nesel I could back into a door without any problems. -

I don't mind a longer course because I've been out of the trucking industrial for so long and know I need to learn all over again.
Question: You thought I should maybe try something else. Like what?
My opinion on driving:
I feel because I've been in Taiwan for so long, I really don't have experience in anything else. Also I really enjoyed driving across the country, Canada or America would be nice. -
Hey brother!
All you have to do is find a company with "REFRESHER COURSE", they are usually 2 to 6 days long...
Their purpose is to just refresh maneuvers in your mind and get that muscle memory back!!!!
There's no cost, it's for guys like you..
I was something like that, been 15 yrs, but I paid another brother for use of his truck & trailer for a month and a half to practice backing, then I went and took the driving test and passed the 1st time!!! ;-D
I never went to a CDL school (That's the new way), I am a 2nd generation driver, learned a lot from my Vietnam dad in a '77/ '78 Mac Cab over!!! He taught me at 15yrs old to drive a manual truck and car & take an engine out of a Mopar car.. lol ha ha ha
I love the old school guys!!!
Back with the older guys you learned to drive all sorts of machinery, which they should go back too, instead of the way they have these schools today setup...
But anyway, it's easy to get back into it!!!
Don't let all the negative stuff people are saying about the industry is today deter you brother, there's still plenty of $$$$ to make and fun & joy to have!!!!
The only difference today, the only REAL difference is you NEED to get on Google and research plenty of trucking company reviews on websites like Glassdoor.com and indeed.com, etc, etc BEFORE YOU SIGN ON THE DOTTED LINE TO WORK FOR THEM OR WORK WITH THEM!!!!
Oh yeah and the trucks are much more cooler technically!!!
Peace and Blessings!!!Orian sport Thanks this. -
i have over 35 years time in. ok, so suppose i had to leave for whatever reason, for say 5 years, and my DOT card expired cuz i couldn't get it renewed for whatever reason, NOT health related issues, just couldn't get it done.
do you know that means that i am new again and my 35 years time means jack squat.????
so i'd rather start fresh at something else.
maybe a male stripper??
i hear they make a killing, and with a body like mine....
i'd be a super star...!!!!!!bigbyrc and Orian sport Thank this. -
bigbyrc Thanks this.
