    So 1997 Emery Air Freight lands the biggest air mail contract ever. To say they bit off more then they could chew was an understatement.

    They were in charge of flying the air mail to it's destination and also in charge of sorting the air mail.

    They did not have an experienced staff of mail sorters and the postal workers union was none to happy about having a private company do the air mail sorting.

    So the postal workers surged the air mail system and volumes were way way way higher then what the post office had told Emery they were predicting. The post office workers were trying to over run Emery.

    It was a big fat M E S S.

    CNF Officials had to meet with the post office to tell them that, what was going on there wasn't exactly what they signed up for, but no worries they would get it.

    So after losing money and getting hosed at the beginning of the mail contract CNF dedicated 18 planes and pulled all there resources CCX stepped in and was hauling mail when the planes were grounded or were to slow to fly and the stuff needed to move.

    Menlo Logistics designed all the sorting centers and all the ground transport routes and all that jazz.

    There was all this controversy in 1997 when Emery Air Freight was doing the air mail and the controversy was that because the post office had to sub the work out it meant there service levels that the post office could provide were not exactly what they advertised them to be.

    Anyhow, all the CNF companies rallied together when it was easier and faster to ship by truck then plane and would make the time deadline you better believe they were loading those Con-Way regional trucks up.

    Which worked out because at the time Con-Way Regional Carriers were uniting and they offered a 3-day coast to coast service. So because planes are not flexible and bad at short runs a lot of the first class and priority mail was being sent out and shipped distances by CCX truck.

    Fairly quickly though CNF and Emery Air Freight got there game together and was able to handle the high volume of mail. They joked that what they did in a couple months would have taken the Post Office 5 years to do.

    Postal Officials were amazed at how fast CNF tomorrows company of the future was able to fix the problems so fast and get it all together.

    The post office officials were amazed at how fast CNF did things and watched in amazement.

    Emery was a troubled and turbulent company for most of it's time with CF. However it did have some success in the 1990s.

    However in February of 2000 Emery Flight 17crashed and burned and killed all 3 crew members.

    This was the final straw the FFA did some inspecting and found that the plane was missing a bolt and decided that Emery Worldwide was an unsafe air fleet and told CNF that enough was enough and they grounded Emery's fleet of 37 cargo planes, for improper maintenance.

    CNF decided they had, had enough laid off the workers and terminated the lease on the planes and turned them back in and shut Emery down as they would say.

    UPS bought the name Emery Worldwide, but as of today the Emery Worldwide that CF and CNF owned is now defunct.

    I get the impression that Emery had ongoing maintenance issues and that crash was the last straw?

    They had another crash in 2001 plane with a bad left landing gear. But the crash in 2000 was the biggie and once the dust settled on that the FAA grounded the fleet and that was the end of it.

    So there's going to be a part II to this thread and that's Con-Way it's self because Con-Way it's self had a lot of width and depth.
    Con-Way was the FedEx and Old Dominion of the 1980s and 1990s.
    Con-Way was the FedEx Freight of it's day in the late 1990s they were top of the LTL heap.

    Basically if you weren't shipping Con-Way then obviously you didn't care about your freight and figured it was fit for the garbage can.

    Con-Way was the primer carrier of that decade they were top of the heap.

    So I am going to do an expo-say on them and all there services and divisions.

    My reading of archived industry news articles reveals it took a year to develop a viable CF spinoff plan due to its complexity and SEC compliance requirements. Dose Never Stand Still discuss in any detail the corporate maneuvering that took place to facilitate the spinoff? I'm sure your aware of the conspiracy theories surrounding this subject.

    Not to much and neither does The Legend of Conway they just say that they put Curry in charge of CF and "spun" the company off in 1996. Then waited for CF to go on there own road show saying
    "Hey were on our own."
    Then CNF Came out and said "Hey remember us? We used to be tied to CF, well not any more! You know all that great service you get with Con-Way well now that were free of that awful Consolidated Freightways Motor Freight we can serve you better with all of our divisions and services!"

    They didn't go into a ton of detail as to how CF was spun off.

    Not to get off topic, but can anyone explain to me the union strike at Overnite between 1999-2002 how it started and how it ended?
