Hey everybody,
I'm looking for a little overall advice on entering the otr trucking industry. I've had my class A CDL since 2008, through a class offered in my high school. I have no class A experience outside of school. I spent approx 6months operating a dump truck, and 2 years in a 4 car carrier running northern maine to southern connecticut and all parts in between. After spending the past few years as an automotive tech, I've decided to follow a life long dream and drive over the road.
Im no sure what companies to look into. I live in northeastern vermont which limits a lot of my options. Plus with my limited driving experience, i need time with a trainer, and have no recent experience whatsoever.
Im looking to run dry van
Are the only real options the mega carriers? Ive looked into a few so far and they dont look great. The ones ive looked at are
Swift
Western express
Werner
Crst expedited
I'd love to know other places to look in my hiring area
Im committed to the dealership im at until the end of march, and have gotten nowhere asking recruiters for info, saying they cant look that far out. Im really just trying to develop some sort of plan since i have a family to support
Im leaving a 45k a year job to drive. Spending all day turning wrenches on rusty junk has gotten old and unpleasant. How long would it take a relatively career driven individual to start reaching that income level as an otr (hopefully dedicated or regional eventually) driver? Is it going to be worth the move after a few years?
Sorry for all of the questions, and thanks in advance for your help.
Where to start when entering the trucking industry?

Here's some food for thought...
Mattflat362 Thanks this. -
Developing a plan. I like your attitude.
Family to support.
Do you want to see said family? I would look at trying, and you can get in green, to a union shop doing local, or local line haul.SingingWolf Thanks this. -
No problem making 50 k after a year but don't plan on being home or having any kind of a real life.
