I'm 40 and a Marine veteran. The 9 to 5 in an office isn't for me and I'm burned out on construction and security work.I wanna be on the open road driving. I've been doing some research on companies that offer "free" CDL with a 1 year attachment. I don't mind that, but I wanna make sure that I get in with a good company that's gonna take care of me. I also am looking at paying out of pocket and taking the CDL I earn, and going to a reputable company with zero attachment.
I guess what I looking for is first hand experience in both these scenarios and what people think or what recommendations you all can give. Do you recommend going it on my own or going to a company and getting the training for free. Like I said, I'm green as the grass to this and I wanna do it right the first time. I already have my DOT Physical and am working on taking the CDLP test next week.
Thanks in advance for any an all information. It is and will be greatly appreciated.

Yeah sorry about that guys. I thought about it as soon as I sent it.
I live in Northern Virginia (near MCB Quantico). I have a couple CDL schools that are right up the road from me, and they finance, as I am not able to drop close to $4000 in one shot.
Thanks again for the reply.midnightlost and Shock Therapy Thank this. -

This is just a suggestion from a Vet to a Vet, i was working for YRC. I think they offer free CDL training & employment upon completion. They are not a bad company, but some terminals are some what cut throat. But, thats trucking sometimes. No surprise. They have decent pay & benefits that are pretty good. Its a good start if u can get on with them, & maybe it can be a fulltime career for ya. I havent seen anyones benefits as good as the military until i worked for YRC Freight. Give them a try. They have terminals every where. Just google them, but the app is done online. Good luck my Marine friend. Semper Fimidnightlost, Marine_Trucker_77 and Shock Therapy Thank this.
