If you guys have seen some of my other post you know my situation. I decided to go to Roehl. Just waiting to get into one of there classes in GA since it's only about an hour and a half from where I stay. I'm wondering is there a lot more waiting around for loads running flatbed vs van. I would rather run flatbed because I've been running hot shot for over 10 years it's kind of the same speed as what I was doing and I don't mind the exercise tarping stuff we needed. When it comes to loads yes they pay a little more but if your waiting around in between loads I may as well do the van division until I get out from under the one-year agreement.

I don't know your situation, and I'm not going to look. No offense.

Dry van is where it's at. You never wait ever. Ever. Unless you find yourself stuck one of those destination dead zones.

Sometimes flatbed, with some companies, is more regional than OTR. Ask about that if it's an issue with you. Might get more long haul with their "National Van Fleet", but you'll have to ask about that to be certain.

When i worked for roehl years ago, i heard a lot of complaints from flatbedders about not enough miles and too much sitting. I don’t know how accurate that is, some people just like to complain if you know what i mean. I always took it with a grain of salt.

I did have a couple friends who switched from flatbed to curtainside and did much better. The good news is, it’s real easy to switch divisions if you aren’t happy. Good luck with your class!

I do like the idea of curtain side because you pretty much call anything in dimensions for the most part.

The contract is for 120,000 dispatched miles. My girlfriend just finished hers, took close to a year and a half.

Cheap freight, low pay, expensive benefits, crap equipment (especially tarps, which you will use a lot!), poor equipment maintenance.

Roehl ain't the company they used to be. Old man stepped down (or was forced out), Jr. is running the show. Pure beancounter madness.

Hmm, things must have really changed if there's no waiting with a dry van. It used to be, in order of waiting, reefer, the most, then van, then flatbed, and the least would be tanker. I pulled a lot of vans, and it was right behind reefer, "we don't have your stuff ready," or, "we don't have room for your stuff", and wait you will. Then flatbed. Generally, people that order stuff on a flatbed, need your freight to continue doing something. Same with shipping, the stuff is waiting for you. Not to say you won't wait with a flatbed. I hauled shingles out of Cleveland, I sat there all morning once. Tanker, the least waiting, aside from loading/unloading. Usually, customers order tanker stuff when they need it, and will shut down if you don't arrive, so again, they are waiting for you. Hope that helps.

No clue I haven't pulled a van since the 90's. Spent most of the past 20 years in the oil field.

I run curtain side for Sprinter in the West and I have my loads pre-planned at least 24 hours in advance. I'm never waiting and I get home every weekend for a 34 reset.

The most I sat was when I pulled Van, then later when I went flat, the most I sat was when I was in line to pickup or deliver, otherwise it was run run run. Most of the flat sitting was my tarping time. No idea about tanker, but I'll soon know the answer to that.
