FMCSA is supposed to come out with a addendum to the HOS rules clarifying PC, as you can ask 10 different inspectors today if a situation is OK or not, and get 10 different answers. About the only consistent aspect today that most agree on is that your starting and ending point of a PC "trip" must be the same point before resuming lines 1-4 activity on your HOS. You cannot "advance your position". I hear a lot of "must be unladen", which is true because the rule states that, however what about hauling expedited freight with a straight truck? Most inspectors know this makes no sense to penalize the driver in this situation even though the rule says otherwise. The PC rules need a serious update and rewrite for clarity.

Haven't read all the responses yet but, I can tell you that you can have it edited to fix this. I've done it several times and I'm leased to a larger carrier, just have to call the regulatory dept an explain that on my way back I forgot to hit off duty drive. They edit it.

Please read my earlier explanation, what you say is true only if you/they are running a AOBRD system. If they are running an ELD system, you cannot edit drive time legally. If they are able to edit it, and it is an ELD system, then the ELD they bought is not compliant (which is possible, because a lot of them are not compliant...)

Can you post the actual regs that state that the office cannot edit drive time on an ELD?
No seriously... I think this is one area where "everyone knows" it's not allowed, but it really is.

I ask as I just went over 395.20 to 395.38 and did not find anything. Everything I found that talks about edits from the admin portal does not mention drive time.
I could have missed it, and I'm willing to learn, but it would be nice o know where it is stated, if in fact it is.

 

Your company can switch your time to off duty driving as long as you were unladen.
FYI if you are assigned to a load they can't allow off duty driving unless you have placed your load in custody of someone else like shipper or receiver lot. For obvious reasons, I never show having an assigned load until I am physically under the load. Company policy usually covers this area.
