Glider trucks are not always exempt. Only exempt if the engine is 1999 or earlier.

    TallJoe Thanks this.

I wonder how they justify the exemptions. Probably came to terms that falsifying HOS always was and still is necessary to make things right. But yeah...I have my needs too, I want to be exempt - staying at a truck stop for 10 hours is too much too bear. Cows and pigs can't handle it, why should I?

    Oxbow and DSK333 Thank this.

All you got to do is have a letter that says you can be off duty from your company. And if you own the company, that should be an easy one for you you to get...

I quite often walk across the road to the local diner while waiting to be loaded or unloaded. How is that not line 1?

Well, I'm not quite as adventurous as you. I simply go to the shippers cafeteria and sit down and have lunch and laugh at whichever news channel is on that day. :)
I would love to see some lawyer try and say I have any duties to perform. Heck, I don't even need to move the truck until my lunch is over, as I'm the last truck for that shift. They will not load anyone else anyway....

This is an area where we all tip-toe around. Some carriers have a policy that if you are not assigned a load you are considered relieved of duty. We were considered relieved of duty until we formally accepted the work assignment.
One company I worked for assigned us our trucks, and then stated in our working agreement that we were allowed to use the truck as our personal vehicle. This policy was very effective in keeping us out of trouble.
In fact a friend and co-worker was stopped by DOT while off-duty driving in Indiana and threatened with an out of service violation if he didn't stop and take a ten hour break. My friend explained that he was relived of duty and was now heading home for a family emergency and refused to comply. The DOT officer threatened him with an out of service violation and he still refused to comply.
Finally the DOT officer contacted his superiors and was told to escort my friend to the state line. Their were no repercussions because my friend knew the law and our company policies backed him up.
