    It all depends...
70-80k with good benefits is a good wage, without benefits, no!
If you have to buy your own insurance for a family you can deduct $18000 per year from this income (for a good insurance without horrible deductibles).
I'm meanwhile in an age where insurance is important for me and my wife.

And it's not all about the money, you can make a lot of money and the job still sucks...

In my opinion mileage pay or percentage pay sucks anyway. You never know what you get, are loads available or not.
I as a driver offer you as an employer my workforce, my skills, my experience.
Pay me by the hour, $15 per hour as soon as I leave my home till I'm back at my home.
If you have work for me 14 hrs a day I will work these 14 hrs, 10 hrs are my hrs for resting.
It's your responsibility as an employer to get enough work for me.
If you don't have work for me it's not my problem, but I'm away from home and still available for work and I want to get paid for the time I'm available.

There's a old saying. "Dress for the job that you want, not the one you already have". Has done me and my employers well over the years. Even worked when I employed myself. Will never forget it either. It's too simple.

You need to work for a mail contractor then. Thats how they pay. Something like $25 or so an hour (depending on where you live) and another $3 an hour (+/-) to a 401k to offset the benefits they dont give you. That was before Obama though, so I dont know if the rules have changed.

Except you dont actually get paid by the hour. They base it on how many hours it SHOULD take you, not the actual. I used to run fast, so I worked less for the same money.

I would be more than happy if I could get paid $15 an hour, but this includes all hrs I'm away from home.
    24 x 15 = 360 a day.
I'm only restricted by law to work less than 24 hrs ;)

Shoot Man!! NightGunner!! I gotta tell ya. 1600/week is good revenue for a company driver. Id have No Problem with that.
They don't make that in the Dakota's, in the patch, hauling frac sand. And those guys are going 24/7.
Short haul, call your days off, and make a consistent 1600. I'll quit O/O and go Company Driving anytime..

1600 is way more than what we need here in the south. Ive been at 1600 a week before if not more than that. It's really good pay. Don't tell anyone 400 a week would be adequate LOLZ... he he heee..

I see an issue with hourly pay in otr sand regional driving. We've all seen the meme from a ups dispatcher to their drivers about driving under the speed limit being dishonest and stealing.
The same aspect would apply to a driver in otr and regional runs of short hauls. Drivers will milk the clock to maximize their hours I duty in order to maximise their wages on a daily basis. They would claim slow traffic, or bad weather, or accidents. I look at percentage pay as a performance based pay. Millage pay to me is a performance based pay with a ceiling.

And yet looking at UPS as your example...
When was the last time you passed one? Heck, for me it's a notable event in the day when I do. Now getting passed by one, well that's common.
Oh, and I set my cruse to 65, in a 65 zone.
