Why is it so many company drivers want to be "compensated", for doing nothing?

    Just curious.

I think your missing the point. It's not about being paid to do nothing.
It's about being there to perform the task, and cannot, due to no fault of your own.

Man, for the life of me, I can't think of any other industries where that might happen...

    Oh, wait,

Construction worker shows up... Sorry, truck didn't come in with building materials, driver got "tired", or something... no work and no pay for you today.

Factory worker shows up... Sorry, truck didn't show up with widget parts, driver got "tired", or something... no work and no pay for you today.

Landscape worker shows up... Sorry, truck didn't show up with plants, driver got "tired", or something... no work and no pay for you today.

Tell you what though... We're going to pay you anyways... we'll just take it out of the truck driver's pay, since its his fault for not showing up.

    Yep, they probably should.
    Given your line of reasoning.

If I am in a truck 700 or whatever miles away from home,I am willing and able to drive but you for whatever reason have no work for me then yes,I totally expect to be paid for " doing nothing " because I would much rather be at home if I am not going to make any money.

So by your theory, company truck breaks down from a blown turbo, driver is stuck in a hotel for a week, not the drivers fault, company pays for his hotel, should be get breakdown pay? If not why not? If so, how much?

Yeah? Try that in a UNION shop. They get paid. I work for a union company. If I show up to work on time and they arent done loading me (or quite often havent even started loading me yet) Im on the clock at my start time. Not my fault someone else didnt do their job. Im here, now, ready to do mine. So I SHOULD get paid for it.

If they cancel my run after I get to work, I get paid for the run. It isnt my fault the load got cancelled.

If I work in a factory and they shut down because a shipment didnt arrive, that isnt the workers fault. Thats MANAGEMENT for depending on something getting there exactly when they need it. Thats why UNION factories dont wait until the last second to get whatever parts they need well in advance.

PoleCrusher, would lead you to believe, we're more like construction workers, factory workers, landscape workers, who drive in to work from across town only to be told there's no work today.
But, we'll take it from the Truck Driver who just drove 2500 miles to get here in a blizzard. And he's a bit late

Frankly if I drove across town only to be told "no work today" I would still expect to be paid for my time spent getting there and back because they could have called me.My time is not free to use it for whoever wants to!

    I would also.
But, not at the expense of the driver, if he has a legitimate reason for being late
