I am not by any means an experienced trucker (only 39 months of driving) but if any noobie reads this I will give you this advice: Don't look only at per mile rate!
Like in the title I quit 65 cpm job and I am going back to drive for 57 cpm.
Yes, I was paid honest 65 cpm and detentions after 2 hours but it was taking me 7 days to do 3000 miles.I sat 5 h here,4 h there and so on as it was reefer only work.I also drove mainly in the East (PA,OH,NJ,MD) with all cons associated with East (lack of truck stops, speed limits, traffic, winter weather, narrow roads).
My new old job is mainly TX,NM,MS,LA with very occasionall East run and it's dry van work.Taking everything into account I will make same money but in shorter time and in easy way. Less is sometimes more.

    At least you finally learned.

It’s not how much you get paid is how much you drive

Now if you were an owner op you’d want to drive less for more money. Makes sense

Edit: and you get to sleep in now lol. No more 3am appointments

    It's all about the miles.

2000 miles a week at 57 cpm is $1140 gross.
3000 miles a week at 43 cpm is $1290 gross.

When a company is going to pay you less per mile, but guarantee you miles every week without much sitting, that's the gravy boat right there.

Its not always about how much per mile. But how much we can make in those miles. Back in the early 80's. Ran for big money yes 0.12 cents per mile. Most were making 18 to 19 cents per mile. At the end of the week, I was making $150. to $200. more then the guys making more per mile.
But I got paid for everything I did. Plus $15. per day to eat on. Plus Motel room every night. Plus pay for every drop, and some drops paid for 8 to 10 drops. It paid in units, so many units was a Drop. And we put off 50 drops per week. But might not make but 15 stops.

We stress on here to new drivers to not focus on cpm. Most don't listen though and say things like, "Well, I won't work for less than $.50 cpm, blah, blah, blah. These remarks come from people that don't have a cdl yet. So, I use myself for an example as being paid $.36 cpm and at the end of the year having made $65K and only working 11 mos. a year due to long vacations overseas. Some people just can't comprehend how the pay structure works in trucking and how accessorial pays figure in the big picture.

Why not both ? At .66 a mile and run 3000 miles a week. Home every week. And get about 300 a week in acc pay.

Indeed. They might get 50 cpm, but they'll be sitting at the door for 8-10 hours waiting for no pay while the rest of us are making 38-44 cpm driving all day or getting paid to load/unload or tarp/untarp.

Steel Dragon and Chinatown Thank this.
