Have you ever been to a dock that you absolutely couldn't back into

Performance foods in Victoria texas. That's where I scuffed the step. Dock made for straight trucks with a fence in front of docks.

 

Once in a place called I think Mechanicsburg or West Gettysburg. I get shaky when I get into the Carlise area with the surrounding towns. Anyway.

I did a overnight straight through from Heinz in Toldeo to a place that did breakbulk with ketchup packets.

I get there, Excel Inc I think, Not certain. The problem is time passes slowly erasing memories....

Anyhow.

Sun shining arrived 9 am appt time place had 22 docks empty except dumpster in far end on a two acre lot.

They say pick one, we don;t care today have fun. So after a hour of trying to get into ANY dock, I was too tired to do it. Driving tired and sleepy is worse than driving drunk when you consider the loss of higher brain functions. Staff man got in and backed in for me.

There was one in a place called new haven CT. They wanted me in there inside the building. SQUEEEZZZED THUMP OI!!! OY!!! HEY YOU *&^% oh no...

Getting out? Keep in mind that 45 foot reefer had 6 inch insulation panels on the inside of the doors. The cement walls on the edge of the bay stripped them. Boss man says WHAT DIDJADO!!! I told him. He exploded. That's a thousand dollar overnight, hell and damnination... I cannot send you back there now. He never did.

But that THUMP echoed in my head to this day, sound of VICTORY. Never mind the yelling.

It's do-able, but a pain in the ###. The dock just has factory infrastructure in front of it so you have to blind-side back in.

 

The old White Farm Equipment warehouse here in town. They had 2 inside docks, at the end of a long inside approach, where they had flatbeds on both sides, that they would side load. You had to maneuver between the flatbeds, and then try to line up on a dockplate at the same time.
After about 30 minutes of trying, one guy came up, and said "just drop your trailer outside, we'll have one of our guys put it in."

 

You must have unloaded on the west side of the building. I always unloaded on the north end of their building

 

Happened to me about 3 months ago. Some little building in Commerce City, CO, absolutely never designed for full sized trucks, just a box truck dock with another building in front of it. I told them there was no way, but I'd give it a shot. Yeah, there was no way, and after 30 minutes, I had to back out of there onto the street to leave. The guy working their dock said he didn't understand why JB Hunt still kept giving these intermodal cans out to 3rd parties that didn't run daycabs. Man, I wouldn't even want to try it in a yard truck! Luckily, this was routine with them and JB Hunt, so he wasn't upset with me, anyway. It was my only walk of shame in my years of driving so far.

 

Yep! In the Bronx! I can’t remember the place; it was 10 years ago.. I told em.. hell, no.. throw me a chain and pull out the pallets or I’m taking this product elsewhere and they can figure it out with the home office.. no way in hell I was risking my CDL in a place where no full-size truck and 53 foot trailer should never, ever be.. they brought their forklift out and I hook chains to them 1 by 1 and they pulled them off! Lol

 

Phoenix, AZ convention center was a bit tough. Gotta go few floors underground and back up from the right side, in a dark, being afraid to hit wall or another truck

 

99 cent store warehouse downtown city of angels. I was the only otr guy trying to alley dock in a privite narrow alleywhen all I saw was yard trucks doing it. After 30 mins I said I am not able. Have a yard truck back it in. So they did.

 

yep we've all prettty much had one of those days and thank goodness its usually only once a year.
