I'm not sure if they'd ever use you for extraboard. You'd probably just cover linehaul vacations for schedule drivers who are home everyday. You can probably get some good info about that here: Estes Express Lines

I'm telling you, Estes is clearly the better option. When I got hired, I would've taken anything to get in. The TM was so honest and even admitted I shouldn't take combo. I told him I didn't wanna work docks and he ruled it out. Extra board isn't bad. I don't think I'll switch to a scheduled run because I don't wanna work nights.

SAIA must be desperate. They are advertising like CRAZY. The rules are forcing drivers away.

So you ultimately took the extraboard slot? If so, what does your typical work week look like if you don't mind sharing?

FWIW, the company I work for is currently getting a big influx of drivers coming over from Saia. We've got a lot of ex Con Way/XPO drivers too.

We don't have any former Estes drivers.

Hell yea I took extra board. I was local and Marten transport and hated it. I needed to hit the Road again so I did extra board. I usually leave Friday and be back Tuesday night sometimes Wednesday morning. I'm a Friday start. It may sound bad, but terminals are closed on weekends. When I get there, I tell Central dispatch what I want and they give it to me more often than not. Anything near 3K miles is almost $2000 here. Last week I ran 2796... Gross $1796 taxed to $1321.

That's interesting. My buddy who works at ODFL was telling me they have at least 3 ex SAIA drivers, and I've heard the same from a guy that works at the new R&L terminal here. Obviously people switch jobs for better opportunities etc, but I have yet to see anyone from SAIA, touting any respectable numbers in regards to guys or gals that leave other companies specifically to go to SAIA. If they just go rid of the driver facing cams, and lightened up on some of the micromanagement, I'd have no problem giving them a shot to get some experience in LTL. But I'm just not sure I can deal with that bs.

Being micromanaged and overly scrutinized for petty things is a pet peeve of mine, and I'm reading review, after review of similar situations occurring. There will always be bad apples, and people who complain, but when you're seeing the same complaints at various terminals across the US, those claims start to hold some validity, and you have to start wondering how bad it can be. If the atmosphere is really heading in the direction that it appears at Saia, there's no wonder they're having to advertise like crazy and offer sign on bonuses.

They're just doing too much. I'm not working anywhere with driver facing camera.

Dave, you sound like you're REALLY thinking this out, and kudos for that. You know how it works in this industry, and one day your wife will get it(took a while for mine, too). And you understand that the more desperate they are to hire you, the more it should raise red flags. Saia used to be a good job until the safety department started thinking they ran the company, and now drivers are fleeing like their hair was on fire.

If I lost my gig at FXF, the first place I'd apply would be Estes. XPO, Central Transport and Saia are the three LTL companies at the absolute bottom of my list, meaning I'd sooner go back OTR than work there. Saia for their insane micromanagement, XPO for their drivercams, and Central for being totally ghetto.

I think you know what to do. ;)

CT has better equipment now tho. New trailers is what I've been seeing lately.

It ain't the equipment, it's the attitude. From everything I've heard, they don't care if they have to run the freight through a woodchipper to get it in there, and that's an outlook I don't countenance in the slightest.
