Well, after riding in it, it sounds good. Even better when the turbo kicks in. I will get the serial number because he would like to know whats been done to it and what hasn't. Thanks for the info 550.

You look at it all wrong. It is protecting my investment from the rate cutters.
-
For rate cutting take a look at the big companies.
-
Dry freight and reefer is a lost cause. Most of those guys will drive a truck for free. I really don't understand them.
And the "training companies" are the absolute worst. I have never seen such abuse of drivers.
And then there are the zero down, or lease a truck and work for us scams. That is nothing but an end run around the labor laws. -
Your right but your forgetting the smaller companies are also cutting alot of rates. Keep in mind they have alot less overhead so they can do it even cheaper than the big companies.
I've seen more times than not guys who go out and get their own rights go in and underbid companies to get the freight! Once that ball starts rolling you can't stop it till its to late.Donk Thanks this. -
I too am paid by the hour..
Since i have owned this truck with a cummins, it has been a pita..
missfiring for no reason, poor economy ( not related to right foot ) and generaly an overpriced spares supply means i have had enough of cummins and will not return..
The cat i had before, had less advertised HP, but was not noticably slower, used less fuel, had no gremlins to annoy me every other day ETC ETC....
I will own another Cat, they are a better engien for a DRIVER, not a steering wheel atendant who wants to be WFO all the time..
Drive a cat properly and it WILL get better mileage than the others. I proved this back to back with people with other makes of engines on the same job as myself..
add to the fact that the gearing was very wrong for the cat, where they all had the correct gearing for their engines..
so, tell me this.. why is cat so bad? because they recognised they would need to sacrifice their reliability and simplicity for a bullcrud emissions standard?
i admire their decisions to give up the income the onhiway brought them, to stand up for their ideals..
look at cummins..aka cumapart and detroits emissions compliant offerings?
reliablity? where? cost efective? not parked in a dealer getting warranty work.
Sorry, you like you old mechanicals, fine. but your statements are obviously given by somone who lives in the past and refuses to deal with anything outside of your perceptions...
Please come again when you can logicaly argue your point, and provide much proof, first hand if possible.. otherwise its nothing more than my cousins uncles brothers sisters former roommate said crap..
and for the record, i could care less how you make your living, good luck to you. but until you have walked a mile on somone elses shoes dont judge them or their decisions.550hpW900L, C16KIWI, CaterpillarWrench and 1 other person Thank this. -
I for one will hate to see Cat go. I started in 1973 with ford 8000 with 270 cummins 10 direct and 4.44's, walking beam no air ride seat 188 in wheelbase. sorry driver, your trucks not rough. Iv'e had a number of NTC cummins and i liked them, but when you take it from 400 to 500 hp you just turned it into a 250,000 mile engine. had 8V71 and 8V92 and 6V92. you think your fuel milage is bad try an 8V82. then a 3406 cat. there really isn't any thing to say, it pulled down low and in midrange, it got fair fuel milage and nothing could run with it in the hills except another cat, or every once in while a V8 Mack. the only cummins that could compete power wise was KTA.

If that was aimed at me, i was only talking about the newer gear that i have had the most time with..
My first truck was a COE on a wheelbase of around 110", 250 cummins, 9 direct, some ultra heavy duty rear springs and uprated front spring packs.
Turntable was fairly forward of the rear axle so it bucked like a mule.
The air seat was broke, so it was solid all the way..
not as bad as it could have been but i didnt learn the easy way. turned a lot of miles in that old COE.
now as for fuel economy, thats true about all the old guzzlers, and all i can say is im dissapointed that i was born into a generaton of softies and missed out on the old iron, even though it was back breaking hard work, it was honest work...
all that said, my experiences with cat have all been positive, even when they were negative, if you catch my drift..
Cummins on the other hand, i found them to be more stuck up than the worst i have heard ANY cat workshop being called.
imagine not allowing me to get a readout of the ecu in a truck i own?
its my info, i own it, let me look..
cat on the other hand, showed me every page of info on their computer and printed what i wanted no hassle and no charge... even altered a few settings to suit my desire to have a more responsive throttle pedal..
sorry, but the road will be a bleaker place without cat. all it does is take the pressure off cummins to at least atempt to provide a "better" product. -
sorry agent, not aimed at any one, I just saying i will miss cat. the cat i have now is the worst engine i have ever had, but i know that cat is good, and there a bad one in every bunch. I didn't mean to offend anyone, just telling how i felt about cat leaving
-
Nah your cool..
i am over people telling me cause i am young i have it easy.. too many CO's and drivers here in au think anyone under 35-40 is too young to drive big rigs, and must know nothing.. so i go on the offensive now..
just cause i managed to go from a cheap crappy coe to a nice western star then to another crappy but powerful COE, a lot of guys have their panties up their butt cracks over it.
jealousy that they lost theirs or couldnt start out i guess.
