§ 658.16 Exclusions from length and width determinations.
    (2) All non-property-carrying devices, or components thereof -
(ii) That do not extend more than 3 inches beyond each side or the rear of the vehicle

hmm so would the hydraulic upper bed lift cylinders be considered a "property carry device"? If so would it not be considered "property carrying" that when the lift is not activated and the top bed rests on the bottom?

A tarp is non property carrying. A securement strap is property carrying.

A hydraulic cylinder IS property carrying as far as I can see.

But I would love to hear the argument that the hydraulics DON'T carry property.

    TowHaul and Gunner75 Thank this.

I would think anything physically attached to the trailer would be considered part of the trailer.

Trying to find a way around this problem. They want me to remove my drop/tag axle otherwise. Or to remove 2 tires. I need that extra axle for weight support, so i'm in a no win situation. I do own a legal specialized auto carrier, and was told by a supposed expert i am fine up to 108" but so far I am not seeing a clear legal answer yet for my exact unique problem.

You would think.... It's hazy though. Look at curtain sides and Conestogas. The structural support is permanently attached. (use permanently loosely)

But the tarps, straps, and supports holding those tarps can reach a max width of 108" legally.

I'd get confirmed absolute 100% facts on that before I roll. The first 8.5' wide construction zone you come too you will be f'd at 9'. Especially if shes a curvy work zone.
