Ok thanks for the ALL CAPS reply. If you look at some of the responses on here you’ll see nobody wants to be dead right.

That’s an interesting response, I’ll save that one for my last day of driving.

That sounds like the most sensible response when you can see ahead if there is merging traffic. Thanks for the thoughtful reply

Thanks for your reply, often the situation arises that I can’t switch lanes. I try to anticipate the situation in advance but have to weigh the risk of changing lanes as opposed to staying in my established lane. I do respect the opinion of your 35/3M

Not all merge lanes are created equal. There's a couple spots where I'll run the middle lane when traffic is heavy because of short merge lanes and matching sight lines.

Most of the right lane though. Leave lots of space in front of you, anticipate the speed and let them merge around you. Like a couple mentioned you want to be predictable, not changing speed while people are trying to merge around you.

Sometimes that doesn't work and you have to back off for the guy who's at your steer tire and seemingly oblivious that he's running out of asphalt.

Just don't wait until the last second to decide to slow down for that guy, he'll probably wake up and hit the brakes at the same time you do. :|

Patience and space, don't let yourself get in a position where you have to do something sudden.

I get over if I can just as a courtesy. But its their job to merge. They either yield or merge...if I can't get over you're riding the shoulder. I seem to do it every week to some idiot wanting to get on doing 51.

I find that when I drove faster I had to slow down more, which burned more fuel as I had to speed up more. May not sound popular, or reasonable, especially being paid by the mile...

You will arrive at your destination at basically the same time doing 60 as you will doing 65. You will also arrive there more economically. Every mph you drive over 55 burns on average an additional .10 mpg. At a 3.00 average for fuel, that’s almost a 7000 dollar saving per year, per truck. Can’t tell you how many times my ungoverned truck has ended up at the same light as the governed company truck I passed doing 75 a few miles back.

One of my biggest pet peeves are drivers who slow down for merging traffic -DO NOT SLOW DOWN

My other pet peeve is having a driver NOT READING the road and whip over into the next lane without a concern who that pisses off.

I have both happen to me daily. The second one is really a problem when you are doing 75 and a truck sees two cars on the ramp and doesn't calculate that they will come in behind the truck by a truck length and whip over into the next lane with no turn signal or seeing how fast cars are approaching them.
