Let him pass, get on the CB and jump up and down, call the number and turn him/her in, do whatever after the fact but if you don't take steps immediately to make the situation safe again then you're just as guilty as the left lane guy imho.austinmike, farmboy73 and IluvCATS Thank this. -
Our freeway system is over 50 years old and honestly was never designed for today's traffic. Maybe at some point all of these mountainous roads can have 3 lanes. Until then it would be of extreme help if we ALL showed a bit of patience with each other and if it is not asking too much to also maybe walk a mile in that other drivers shoes. You can banter this topic until the bitter end but if you don't show some patience in my view your all wrong, both passer and passie.

I realize that this is a situation where 90% of the drivers believe the driver being passed should not slow down & 10% believe he should. Therefore, I know I'm on the minority side. Here's my take & how I do it.
First let me say, I am governed at 73 so I don't have this issue very much but occasionally, I do experience it.
If I am being passed in this scenario, personally, I am happy to bump my cruise off & let him get around. It dont take but 10 seconds & I only have to drop about 2 mph for 10 seconds max, then just hit the cruise & everyone is good..... everyone.
Look, if he caught me from behind, over all, he is faster than me.... period. No one will make me believe that he isn't. How the hell did he catch me if he.... over all.... isn't faster than me? Even by 1/2 mph. When he gets by me, & if I eventually catch back up to him on the next hill, I bump my cruise again, for just a few seconds & he is gone. After that, I usually never catch him again. Why? Cause over all... I say over all... he is faster than me.
Either he or myself has to bump our cruise. If he don't pass me this time, he'll try again. I can bump my cruise for 10 seconds & most likely, we are done with this situation & everyone.. let me say that again... everyone.. is finished with the situation/problem/scenario. If I don't bump my cruise, we have to deal with the problem again... and again... and again... every time we come to a hill etc. Even if he doesn't attempt to pass me, he has to bump his cruise back 1 mph to stay behind me. Then, because he is actually ... overall... faster than me, he is continually falling back, then catching me, then falling back, then catching me. I'm working that guy to death for the rest of his trip or until one of us turns off.
Everyone talks big about courtesy here but, won't be courteous enough to bump his cruise back 2 mph for 10 to resolve the problem immediately for everyone involved. You, him & all the traffic that is going to be backed up & jamming up the traffic.
If you're so worried about how this impacts everyone & the problems it causes, do something about it. Dont be an ### about it & add to the problem. Again, the guy caught you because he - is - faster - than - you - over - all. Use a little courtesy & resolve the problem early & quickly by bumping your cruise for a few seconds & get on down the road.
Just my 2 cents.
Ok, now... carry on.. I'm done -
Point taken Grumppy,,,,EXCEPT for one thing, the truck trying to pass you may only be "faster" than you because he was drafting you, he was riding in your wake, he thinks he's faster, you assume he's faster, but as soon as he gets about 3/4 the way up on you aero raises it ugly head and says this ain't gonna happen, so then you both just sit there side by side because no one has the advantage of the slipsteam, was he following to close to start with? Probably.
Here is the bigger problem, because of everyone pushing to cram as much into a day as they can everybody is running 10/10ths, right up against the governor, all the time, that is what causes this issue, if everybody would just run a mile or two under their governed speed you would never have this issue.
This is the sole reason that all of my fleet trucks are set at 68 on the Gov. but have 3 mph left in the pedal for just these situation.Muddydog79, Tall Mike and Grumppy Thank this.
