As a former Shaffer driver I believe this. They fried to force me to run from Dallas to Houston with an air leak in one of my break lines. If was so bad I barely had any breaks. Besides all the corrosion your truck endures,fuel gelling etc,not worth it.
Especially if you own or lease the truck.
I drove through an ice storm a few weeks ago,knew the highways would be salted,but the secondary roads were pure ice.
Had my axles locked doing about 5 mph on the access road and trailer started coming around.
Got stopped but was stuck for about 10 minutes trying to get going again.
Winter driving is a huge gamble..one I rarely partake in.

 

Hard call on this one as to who's at fault. I by no means will judge you and your ability because I wasn't in the passenger seat. But, I've seen to many cowboys / throttle jockies in the last 31 yrs. And I've seen companies that try to get the sap out of every part on a truck with poor maintenance, just to keep maintenance to a low. If you feel you did the job properly then hold your head high and walk on. To many companies look for escape goats to keep the $$$ in their pockets, not saying this company is one of them since I have no clue about them. Never drove for a Mega, but have friends that do and I'm not impressed by the way they are treated as drivers. Be safe out there, and best of luck with this ordeal.

Obviously you had one of tucker's old trucks that had been thoroughly trashed. I'd get an attorney.

 

The problem, as I see it, is not whether it’s wrong or it’s right. It seems fairly obvious a broken u-joint is an inexpensive and relatively common repair.

The problem is whether or not you agreed to pay for it. Read everything you sign. Ask for clarification if you don’t understand it.

At my last hiring session, the HR people were amazed that I sat down and for 3 hours combed through the paperwork. Everything I was unsure about, I made a note and I waited until they came back around so I could ask.

Every other driver there (3-4 of us) flipped the pages, signed on the dotted lines, initialed the clauses a-z, 1-100 without so much as reading it. It took them about 15 minutes to get through a packet of 60-70 pages of policies and agreements written in legalese.

THIS is the problem. We assume a company would never expect anything untoward from a driver, such as paying for wear and tear. We are far too docile and trusting of authority, and have been vowed into fear of asking questions.

If you signed such a document, you will have an uphill battle in court explaining why you’re not responsible (for the cost of repairs, not the incident itself). The cause of the incident is immaterial if you agreed to cover the cost of repairs.
