In this industry, do they let you write down your Rx's before you pee or give your hair follicle, or is it standard practice to just shove to cup at you and ask questions if a positive comes back?

There's only a couple of prescriptions involved here, not a suitcase full or anything and I doubt either of them are more serious than Schedule V, but IMO it's still preferable to be as transparent as possible about it beforehand.

No. Make sure you have good contact information so the MRO can contact you later if a question arises. But at the collection sites no they don't.

Right now I am on my smart phone. However later when I can I will post an image of the actual chain of custody form begin at the collection site. This is all they use.

    Proceed with caution....

Some companies disqualify drivers for using any of the federal class 1 and 2 controlled substances ie; prescriptions.

The pee test is designed to root out all drugs banned by the DOT.

DOT publishes a list of medications that are not approved for commercial drivers.

The required DOT urine screen is a 5 panel (marijuana [THC], Cocaine, amphetamines, PCP, opiates). Many companies screen for more than those 5, but those 5 are required.

However; the aforementioned list of non approved drugs includes opioids (which will not show up on a 5 panel but are still prohibited), benzodiazepines such as Valium, Xanax and some anti-psychotic medications, etc. You cannot consume Adderall, Ritalin or other amphetamines even with a prescription.

The last time I checked, there were dozens upon dozens of prohibited prescription drugs that aren’t currently tested for, but if you had a lawsuit launched, you can be sure your history of prescription meds will be vetted.

If you’re not sure, pay your own nickel to a DOT doctor. Don’t wait to fail a screen or find out in orientation that your ADHD meds close the door on your career, script or no script.

This is just not true. There are tons of prescriptions that aren’t approved by DOT but are not tested for. Most recently, the common pain medication Tramadol was added to the list, yet there is no opioid screening at this time, only opiates. The metabolites in urine are completely different.

Just to focus this topic a bit better. This is why carriers are moving to testing hair. Hair testing will uncover lower levels over a longer period of time.
