    OK, I'm going to chime in on this because I am interested in these units. I am also a licensed HAM, and a certified two way satellite installer. First, it appears that the slice is a signal gain improvement device, and maybe antenna made as one unit. If that is the case, then the unit would work without it but the GPS signal will be weaker. It also does appear they or you may also have a software issue from the freeze up reports. Can their code get a virus?

    Now... Satellite signals are always very weak. They also have very peculiar properties due to their very high frequencies. Just moving your mounting position an inch can make a lot of difference with those frequencies. Also, a dirty windshield (especially from road salt) can attenuate those signals. You can have hot spots and dead spots within the dash and cab area of the truck and within inches or less of each other created by an unimaginable array of random reflections within the metal cab chassis. And I am talking about those signals received from orbit!

    Try tinkering with the mounting position. If you find a sweet spot, anchor it there!

    I lost 12v charger for my RM Overdrive Pro 7 which sticks into the smart mount(DC in) and now I can not find a similar charger with a suitable male connector/plug. Could someone tell me exactly what type of connector(outer and inner diameter) is exactly used in the original charger or where I can buy(order) it,

    All my units have sat in the same place on the dash. I'm certain my tablet itself has gone bad. I'm just waiting for the slice to be sent so I can try it out and call tech support back.

    new tnd 540. upgrade from 530(under repair for charging port after 14 months @ $99.99 fee, smh. least I think so. usps says it delivered. no RM receipt confirmation after 2 days......)

    glitchy.

    will connect on home wifi via password, wont connect vis my phone with password.
    will connect to wifi on my phone on open wifi.
    they need a drug test if they think I am leaving my phone in an open wifi state.

    SAID I successfully registered the unit on home wifi yet no email confirmation? also supposedly updated successfully at home too.

    does this model only accept updates over the air or can I update through my laptop on the dock?

    its early yet but I feel like I just bought a $300 paperweight.


    and the font on certain pages..... WTF. SERIOUSLY

    You can only do updates over the air. With regard to the font issues, Rand Mcnally seriously needs to hire a user interface designer. I run into UI bugs constantly on the 740.

    I shipped my defective slice back to rand on 2-27. Called on the 28th and gave them the tracking number. They received it on the 5th of March. Called yesterday and was told they had not shipped my replacement slice. They didn't have a record of me calling on the 28th. Even though they received it 10 days ago, they still had not sent the new one. The new one will ship Monday and be here Thursday or Friday. I leave on Tuesday.
    I'm done with rand. $500 for the first gen tablet and it didn't last a year. $600 for the current tablet and it didn't last a year. Customer support is a joke, with the exception of mark, and contacting them takes forever. 24 hours later I'm still waiting for a supervisor...

    So according to the CSR via chat support the 540 is set up to connect via password protected hotspot wifi on a Galaxy S8? Only via open hotspot?
    @Mark Kling , is that accurate?

    I can tell you the 540/740 will connect to any open WiFi or secured...

    like nonresponsive touchscreen at times? sometimes lags in accepting commands through touch?
