I tell you one thing. The hiring process with Estes took almost 11 weeks. I was working a bull crap local job with the Estes money right at the top of my fingers. I called them EVERY WEDNESDAY man! I hounded them so that they knew my name by my voice when I came to the interview lol.
I feel... Grateful. I came into LTL with one of the top companies. I don't plan on leaving at all. I'm here until I die unless I decided to try o/o.Bob Dobalina and TheyCallMeDave Thank this. -
Just saw a SAIA ad on CL where it said $3K SOB in the title. I think they're telling on themselves a bit. :^)

Hey everyone, I wanted to give you all an update. After trying to run for the O/O to make ends meet to bridge the gap between jobs, I realized he wasn't what he claimed to be so I'll leave it at that. ANYWAY, I'm still waiting to hear back on the background check from YRC, but to my surprise I got 2 calls today. One from Estes who turned me away because I took a few days to get back to them when I was supposed to get on with Saia, apparently the position is really that hard to acclimate to and the guy they hired already quit, or they're busy enough that they need yet another combo driver, and the other call was from McLane trying to get me to come to work for them.
Now, as previously stated, the YRC terminal is a 75-80 mile round trip each day to start out in the "combo" position and the TM said I'd have no problem getting my 40. Working the dock, P&D etc, basically extra board picking up the left overs. Insurance is paid for, starting at 18.51 an hour (not great.) Estes is only 5 miles up the road, 20 bucks an hour to work the dock, 23.61 or something along those lines for P&D and I don't exactly recall the cpm figure they gave me for when I would fill in on line haul, and it's for the exact same position as YRC, and while the insurance isn't free and I'm not sure on the cost, it's a hell of a lot closer to home. The TM said there's no guarantee on hours, but they try to atleast get you your 40. Estes doesn't pay over time until after 55 hours, as opposed to YRC who pays overtime after 40, but the difference in hourly pay might work out to the same. My ultimate goal would be to move into a full time line haul position, which has been my goal since I began entertaining the idea of LTL.
McLane is literally 2 miles from my house and while the work would probably be back breaking regardless of how fit I am, and not being thrilled about touching every package in the truck, I've talked to several guys there who are doing pretty well financially. The only downside, is I'd be extra-board at first and their extra-board works a bit different than LTL. You're on call 24/7 365 until you get to bid on a route (who knows when that would be) or if you get lucky and a senior driver picks you for their route. Right NOW, both Estes and McLane are both enticing just due to the fact they're both literally down the road. All 3 jobs are basically "extra-board" but that's currently the scenario.

Never underestimate the daily commute time
For a local job. Your 10 hours pay is actually a 12 hour day. That gets old real quick.
I would take less money to work 5 minutes from home.LoneCowboy and TheyCallMeDave Thank this.
