Something I will never understand is these guys that go FLYING down some of the long grades. I'd love to know where they got the guarantee that no one is crashed around the curve. Cause if you're heavy, and you're up around 60+, let alone 70+..................they are gonna pick you up with a stick and a spoon after the crash.

Had a driver a few weeks ago on NB Grapevine tell my my brake lights weren't working. I was 79k and he passed me earlier on an upgrade and was obviously lighter, but I walked past him on the downhill side and he couldn't understand how I could hold 45 on the steepest parts, and not use brakes.
Freightliner tells you they won't warn you of overspeed until you exceed 2,300 rpm for 5 seconds. They're not worried about them in the least on downgrades w/ max engine braking until you exceed 2,300. They run (brake) really well around 2,100-2,200 -
It's not as bad as it used to be, but every now and then you'll still hear a loud one where you don't need to be hearing one at all, let alone a loud set.Last edited: Mar 16, 2018

You could have heard him on the other end of the town on that cold night.

Wet or icy conditions, especially with no load on board, are a horse of a different color, but if you find that you’re descending the hill at a steady forward speed with your engine wound up and staying fairly constant without having to touch the service brakes, then you couldn’t have done it better. -

Jakes are a great tool, they can hold you at a speed on a grade or they can be abused with hitting them strong on marginal traction surfaces, Some trans can be shifted quicker with the jake, you have a tool, learn how to use it just don't be that special one when everyone is resting, hopefully the day runners will have mercy on your soul nightrunner.
Woodys and Dave_in_AZ Thank this.
