The easiest thing to do is keep your old glasses when you get a new pair. Chances are they’re scratched and beat up and the prescription may not be exactly the same but they will get you home if you break your other pair.

It’s not a law to have a spare, but it is a law you meet the vision requirements to operate a commercial vehicle. So later on when you get a new pair don’t throw away the ones you’re wearing now.

Has a cop ever tried on your prescription sunglasses? My vision is not bad at all - 20/30, so I just wear regular sunglasses.

In Sept 2015 I had Cataract surgery in my left eye. The Lens used corrected my vision in that eye to 20 20 and corrected for the slight astigmatism in it as well. My left eye was in bad shape and my right eye was marginal. Since that surgery my distance vision would be good enough for me to get a license and medical card with no vision restriction. However because of epilepsy I can not drive and lost my license. I have not worn prescription sunglasses for several years. Plus 90% of the time I was wearing soft contact lenses. I have a cataract developing in my right eye today. I am expecting to have surgery on that eye sometime next year. Once that happens I will have 20 20 vision.

I have had two drivers with no eyeglasses restriction on heir CDL's receive Out Of Service violations that hit MY CSA under 'Unsafe Driver" because the medical renewal noted they used eyeglasses during their re-certification physicals.

I think this is an error by the examiner. If said drivers used corrective lenses during the exam this examiner should have made wearing eyeglasses a condition to drive under. If no restriction was noted I am having a problem understanding under what authority these officers took this action? Unless there is more to this then was stated in my view these actions should NOT survive Judicial Review and should be appealed to the courts!

Definitely an error on the renewal and should be challenged if they don’t wear corrective lenses.
Now if they are wearing contact lenses and it doesn’t show on there licenses it could have been identified when the physician looks at their eyes during the exam.
If they see lenses during the exam it will surely be on the medical card.

CT [Danbury Scale] put the one OOS and told him to walk across the street to CVS and buy a pair despite the fact he told them the were only readers and he carried this huge Sherlock Holmes magnifying glass instead...

With all due respect if there is no eyesight restrictions on the DL or the medical card under what authority is a DOT cop putting a driver OOS. Does not make any sense to me.

I got inspected this week end in sw Florida so I asked the question again of the Florida Cmv inspector.
He said no back up required and also no back up requirement for back up hearing aids for hearing impaired drivers who are required to have hearing aids.
Sounds like that was another uninformed Cmv Inspector being a jack wagon.
