Thinking back about how bad I was when learning how to shift a truck.
Part of me wants to say how much of an idiot your are for putting yourself in this position another part is thinking I hope he pulls it off.
In any case I hope you don't have to deal with any hills or mountains right away.
You could kill somebody or that truck.
I will say this though , not knowing how to control a manual transmission umm... nevermind. Good luck.

isn't it against the law to do barreling in the falls..??

if so, then one might get caught before too long.

or maybe the cops (or whomever else) have had enough daredevils....

It’s against the law but the fine isn’t outrageous. There’s one guy that’s done it several times

Well, I hope he pulls this off. Just to prove the naysayers wrong.

I fail to see why everyone thinks this is so terrible. I had no formal training on a stick, or any truck, and I'm sure there's a few others on here never had formal traing.

Everyone of us had to be a rookie at some point

well.....the truth of the matter, he lied about having manual experience.

yes, we were all rookies and made shifting mistakes, stopping mistakes, taking off mistakes. but we didn't LIE about it.....

but to tell a potential new employer you have said (you can Or have) done something, then be caught in a lie, if YOU were the hiring person, would you hire a liar, regarding his experience?

i know i would not. transmissions cost money, clutches cost money, down time of the truck, costs money.

if he gets so caught up in his mis-shifts, runs a red light, rams a loaded school bus and kills 40 kids, who is to blame here? the guy hiring him..?? heck, he was told by the new employee HE CAN SHIFT.....or the liar.

my feeling is that he will fail, and he will not be back to tell us so.

i feel that he will lie and say he was hired.

hey, it's his future, to live a lie, he'll always have to keep up the lie.

I wish you all the best, I learned how to drive on my own in the barn yard 13 years ago, you should catch on quick I’m sure.

I remember when I was learning on a 10 speed someone told me this, for gears 5 through 10 just add the 2 mph numbers together and that’s when you want to be in that gear.....examples: 15mph 6 gear, 25mph 7gear, 35mph 8th gear, 45mph 9gear and 55mph 10.
Not saying it will be perfect but should be pretty close. I hope that helps some, i remember it helping me.

    Good luck

Going truck to truck at truckstops. “Can you teach me how to shift? I start on Monday...” That’s funny.

If you can't get behind the wheel of a truck see if you can get behind the wheel of something with a stick shift.

It wouldn't hurt to get a little practice using your right arm but shifting a truck isn't the same. More importantly though you can get some practice using your left foot. Stop, start, stop, start just to get comfortable with letting a clutch out. Don't touch the fuel, let it out slow without stalling.

As for shifting the only thing I'll say is don't try to force it in. A light touch is all that's needed when the rpm's are right and when they're not right it's not going in.
