Serious question, why do so many professional truck drivers have difficulty shifting gears?
The OP was being offered $80,000 a year to drive a manual transmission truck. This is why I suggested that the OP get 5 to 10 years of manual transmission experience, to qualify for that $80,000 a year job, when such time comes.

    $80,000 a year
is almost the equivalent of executive pay, SERIOUS top dollar pay.

God bless you and your entire family!

Most of them just don't know any better. The training companies that they go to use automatics because it is easier and faster to train them. A lot or noobs take the easy way out because they don't want to learn a manual. They now become stuck having to work for companies that have automatics or learn how to shift a manual.

You also have to remember that you now have an entire generation that doesn't even know how to shift a manual car. In 2016,only 3% of the cars sold in the US were manuals. I don't think that you can even get a manual pickup truck.

If I could pass a D.O.T. physical, I would have liked very much to have gone to a truck driving school to learn how to drive a truck.

I would have liked very much to have been an OTR truck driver, driving all 48 states and Canada.
2 companies that I would liked to have been able to drive for would have been either Tyson Foods out of Springdale Arkansas or CFI out of Joplin Missouri.

I have never married, never had any children, and live in an apartment which would allow me to be away from home for extended periods of time.

SADLY & UNFORTUNATELY, both of my parents passed away long ago. I no longer have parental eldercare responsibilities. This would also enable me to be able to be away from home for extended periods of time.

God bless you and your entire family!

on "striped down" or work trucks, you can still get a manual.

even though i have a 10 speed truck, i myself prefer an automatic personal vehicle (car or truck) . BUT, if i were to get a "beater" truck for home chores, then i'd get maybe a 4 cyl with a stick.

you know too, i wonder if this is why motorcycle sales have slumped over the years. they ain't got no automatic bikes..>!!!!!
