Here is an explanation of the defect in Cummins ISX15 that causes carbon packing. Usually the engine has high oil consumption with very low or normal blow-by. Ask your Cummins dealer or distributor for "Policy" help. Don't settle for less thean 50% parts and labor. Good Luck!

Another good reason to use Synthetic oil!

    Thanks for sharing.

We were taught about water injection years ago when I was in college to reduce carbon deposits. We actually have an ISX15 in the shop right now getting rebuilt due to the carbon packing issue and I was just asking in general about the water treatment how much nicer it would be versus rebuilding. I hope Cummins comes out with something like that.

Water injection was a temporary work-around and not a fix. The carbon comes back even faster and in the meantime you have downtime and labor costs. plus the downside of oil changes to get the weater out. Its a weak band-aid. Cummins finally started doing what Scania and Daimler (Freightliner) already knew, you need better coolant flow to keep the top of the cylinder cooler to prevent thhe formation and also a saver ring on the cylinder liner to scrape it off if it does form. Cummins came out with rebuild kits that have the new liner with what they call the APR (anti-polishing ring). Thats the fix. In 2014 all ISXs have that liner design. They just make the owners of old engines have to upgrade it on their own dime when they keep plugging DPF with ask from all the oil they've been burning.

I have a better idea. How about we get all this emissions junk after the engine so no more in cylinder solutions and bring back a good hot and fuel efficient burn so no carbon builds up in the first place!

It's cheap to install a water injection kit like something from watermisters or devilsown , you also gain fuel economy.

I'd definitely go this route instead of having a shop temporarily fix anything or doing an expensive rebuild.

You don't have water buildup in oil over 212°F it boils off.

Yep, as long as you don't drown the engine, it's worth a shot on a motor that is facing a rebuild anyway.

I have heard some good reviews on the Cummins recommended Valvoline Premium Blue restore oil to get rid of the carbon packing. Bad thing is its crazy expensive. Some customers reported it dropped oil consumption alot. But in the end it is just putting off the inevitable. Might as well rebuild it with the anti polishing rings to actually fix the issue.
