Air leak is probably the seal starting to leak will eventually leak bad and no longer engage at all better carry a bolt to install that keeps it engaged all time and crimp supply line till you get a new fan or buy a seal kit maybe just what’s called a mini seal kit I did mine pretty easy fix

Like someone said some fans need air to engage some need air to disengage mine needed air to disengage therefore when I disconnected the air line to the fan and crimped it off the fan would stay engaged all time no need to lock in in place with a bolt I prefer this design as I had the other style only disadvantage I see is possibility of clutch slipping while running as it’s meant to be on or off not half disengaged dut to an air leak the kits are cheap compared to new fan if clutch material looks good still just replace seals very easy kit has instructions couple o rings and a plastic cartridge you put it on bench remove snap rings supply with air I used the little air gun in the cab you can do it

This one needs air to disengage. Also want to know when is there supposed to be power to the solenoid with key on or off. Because I don't have power to the solenoid either way. Thanks

I prefer the air on. My current truck and previous cooled well enough that the fan did not need to be on. With my previous truck, I ran it close 1 year without a fan. I had to be careful on long pulls and I couldn't idle for ac.

My Kenworth had the fan on due to a sensor, and it affected my mileage. Now it's off, and it doesn't get hot enough to turn it on.

Just an FYI Sterling's are a pain to find wiring diagrams for. Your truck has a Kysor/Borg Warner air on/off fan clutch. The solenoid is normally closed, so it needs 12V and ground to allow clutch to release and free spin. The 12v is from fuse #12 and supplies the fan clutch relay with 12v for control and common of relay. The engine provides the ground for contol side of relay. So basically ECM contols relay on ground side. 12V should be there anytime key is on. Check powers @ fuse and relay and let us know.
