Hi,
I was wondering if there are any truckers here who are pursuing a college degree (online)?
I'll be 24 years old next month and I am considering becoming a trucker. In addition to this, I am planning on getting a Bachelors degree in Logistics Management. There is a fully credited accredited university that offers this degree online (not University of Phoenix/diploma mill). I already have some college credits and it's going to take me about three years and $25k, but I think it's a good idea. The hands-on experience as a driver combined with the education might make me more marketable to employers as a logistics/transportation manager.
It's going to be a rough three years, but I think I can pull it off. What are your thoughts on this?
Is anyone here in the same situation?

If I could go back in time... I would have stayed in school. The transportation industry is on its knees right now, and I would say it will be like that for quite a few years as the economy continues to tank with no recovery in sight.
Your idea is good, but probably not applicable when it comes time to get a white collar job in this industry. Sure, it may help you personally, but an employer is not looking for you to drive a truck.
What does a truck driver actually do? He drives from point A to point B. That is essentially it. Sure, he handles a small amount of paperwork, but a few hours on a loading dock will give you plenty of insight into that aspect of trucking.
So how will being a driver actually help you?

It can be done. Especially now.
You'll have plenty of free time to study and get your education. While I haven't done it this way myself. I know many that have. -
Currently sitting on an Aeronautical Engineering Technology diploma (graduated before I started driving). Been thinking about going for an MBA by correspondance through this one university up here.
If you have good time management skills I think its a viable goal as long as you can do all your schoolwork by correspondance/distance learning. -
U of Phoenix is not a diploma mill.

I think your plan is solid. You will have time to do the on-line thing and it never hurts to have done the basic job of the company you want to work for. A Mng who has driver before is uselly a better Mng then one who has not.

I have an online associates in accounting. So it would be a good idea. You will have the time as well. As others have said dont bother the industry is tanked. Well so are others. My friend has a phd and he just got laid off. Others i know are close to it. So i guess that doing what you feel is good for you is the right thing to do at this time. Its going to get worse b4 it gets better but it wont be horrible 4eva. Good luck
Baack Thanks this. -
I've been thinking about the same one.

Athabasca?
I wasn't sure what to think at first, but it seems like it is regarded as a pretty solid education. -
Yep. However, an MBA, in and of itself, isn't that special anymore. In fact, for certain positions at some companies it can almost be considered a requirement to even be considered for hiring ... even as a first position. Also, they have become so specialized with so many variations on the theme that the "wrong" one can paint you into a corner.
Athabasca is well regarded in its corner of the education world.
