You can get away without edge protection, but your straps must be very tight, and if your straps start to flap, you gotta make sure to put a twist in them and retighten. You also can't allow your strap to go over the edges where the wire intersects and then stops. I've yet to have an issue yet

I’m pretty anal about twisting straps. Anything over 3-4 ft and I’m putting a twist in it.
