As the boss it is a fine line I struggle with. Doing or checking things myself vs trusting others to do so. On one hand the only way to know for sure things are right is to do them yourself but I try to avoid being the helicopter boss that is constantly looking over everyone’s shoulder. These airlines aren’t the end of the world and we all make mistakes. Some things just make you shake your head though. How in the five minutes it took to get that gear down did none of the other three guys standing there even think about the air lines.

Okay, since you asked...you didn't really designate any single person to accomplish the goal. You just threw the order out there and left it up to them as to who would do what.
When you want something specific done, designate the person who you want to do it.
Anything left up to a committee is probably going to be a mess.
You got off light. You could have dropped the trailer on the tires or the ground. And if you had, it would still be your fault.

A old school safety type person told me once to remember LAP-PAL when dropping and hooking trailers. This is also like the GUMPS mental checklist most fixed wing pilots are taught. Remembering this has served me well. To this day when I think of drop&hooks my mind automatically remembers this. LAP means L landing gear, A means Airlines and P means pigtail. PAL is just reversed. In fact I started using at the bottom of the logbook comments section LAP/PAL for drop and hooks and LAP for a drop and PAL for hooks. Just to help me if I was asked later about what I did.

Yeah well, untill February I was saying same thing but now I can't.
I also ripped out electrical box but it was still working and my boss told me not to worry about it and just make it home.

What I learned and still learn from time to time is to NEVER EVER ASSUME ANYTHING.
And don't charge your drivers for repair,it's little money anyway.

When i was a new driver, i used the number 3 to remind myself to check 3 things when dropping a trailer, or hooking a trailer.......i like LAP-PAL better.

There are some things you should never distract another or allow yourself to be distracted with extraneous conversation or activity while doing.
    • Making change at a register
    • Doing a drop trailer procedure
    • Doing a hookup trailer procedure
    • Doing a pre trip
    • Fueling
    • Routing or issuing air traffic instructions
    • Accepting air traffic instructions
Finish these tasks FULLY before engaging in any other task or relieving yourself of duty. I really hate it when somebody wants to chat you up when you're in the process of fueling or dropping a trailer. And I especially hate it when somebody is carrying on a conversation while finalizing my cash transaction at a register.
