Do you and your trainer switch off after awhile or are you driving most of the time while he/she is in the passenger seat? Phase 1 is a month long and would like to know because I really don't want to team with someone.

Well my first week it was just me driving for as much as I can every day. Usually 10+ hours with only one break (30 mins). My trainer was in the passenger seat but he would be sleeping like wtf. After that you start teaming but even then your trainer will only drive maybe 3-4 hours a day and you drive 10+ hours. You don’t have to drive 10 hours but I did just to get my drive hours out the way

My company teams. It’s 6 weeks and we have to drive during the day and trainers drive at night.

At first I was worried about the teaming but it hasn’t been bad for me. Second day drove through the Appalachians. Trainer didn’t even tell me I was about to do it, he just went to sleep after showing me the retarders. When he woke up he said congrats, and told me what I did. He said telling me might have made me nervous and I wouldn’t have any fun.

You can always wake him up if you need help.

That’s just my experience so far. Take it for whatever it’s worth.

Lots of companies run them as teams. Because their is only solo runs or team runs. Not a good way to train running team because the new driver is tired and so is the trainer.

It's kinda the dirty secret in trucking in my opinion because the mega training trucking companies run trainers as team freight. Instead of taking the time to really train a new drivers. They just push people thru their system and hope you make it. My trainer on my first day, drove all day. Then at 10pm I took over and he went to bed in Nebraska. So no traffic and it was flat and straight driving. That was a long time ago, when I was a trainer they said we had to drive the night shift. So they stopped having new driver running all night.

It to many miles running as team when training in my opinion. It so many new things like sleeping in a truck and trip planning it's take time to show a new driver this stuff

That’s a scam to take a new driver and make him drive team with his “trainer”. That’s utter rubbish. Bullocks.

The idea of a team even though your training is while one drives the other rests the exception being the very first day then your both fresh its not the life for me however some seem to do well with it i just pity the poor trainees, i wonder what the turnover rate is on first time trainees?

How long you drive each day and how long you observe from the passenger seat are completely up to your trainer based on his/her assessment of your abilities and what area of the country you’re in. I used to be a trainer, so I can tell you with certainty that every student is different.

You said this is Phase 1, so is Phase 2 the team portion of training?

My first company (TMC) had my trainer driving the first day or two and ne doing the baking maneuvers. Then me driving as much as i could for 2 weeks, and him driving the last few hours toget parked up close. Then on week 4, we was team driving, me daytime, him nighttime. Week 5 was him daytime, me nighttime, week 6 was all me.

Depends on the company. I drove with trainer next to me all the time. Except if he was making a sandwich. Was never in sleeper longer than 5 mins. Once I was done for the day he drove a few hours. There were no phases where I was.
