Hypothetical question here- what do you do if an officer knocks on your door when you are sleeping in the bunk? Are you required to answer the door by law?

depends if im legally parked or not
if so, then i think they can wait
if not, i cant get there fast enuff
but by law, if yer in the big seat, then yer either on duty/not driving or you are driving
by answering the door you are one of the two......cant be off duty talking to the law -
Thanks for your reply. The reason I ask is because I showed up at a port today and was given a pass back out because I didn't have a twic card. To make a long story short they gave me the address to the twic application building but ran out of hours while applying. Now while I'm parked in the lot across the road from the twic office and it's clearly marked by a sign for twic app parking idk if it's legal to park there overnight and if I am required by law to answer if someone knocks.

You may want to jump out of the Truck before the Tow Truck starts moving.
-
I'd ask and get permission . Otherwise it may be a tow truck waking you up . Are you bobtail ? If you are you can drive off duty to find a place to eat or sleep .
-
I know this is probably a technicality, but if you aren't behind the wheel, you can argue you are neither on duty or driving. Go to the passenger side, and tell them why.
If there is a restricted time limit to parking there, and signs are posted to that effect, you may have to move, but you are there on business.
If you ran out of hours, and the office was still open, you could complete your business after your hours expired, you just couldn't drive.MACK E-6 Thanks this. -
Unfortunately there is noone in the office buildings anymore to ask and I'm still a loaded flatbed with no option to bobtail. I ask because technically it does not matter if I would answer from the passenger or drivers side, it would be regarding the load so it's on duty correct? I hope for the best but was just curious because I hope I don't have to start my 10 hr break again because someone wanted to ask some questions

If I remember correctly it takes awhile to get your twic card? Something like a cpl days or weeks?
Question is will they let you in the port if you just applied for the card or do you have to have it? -
You get a phone call from your office, it isn't on duty time, I can't see how it would be if some officer just asked you why you were parked there, You could just say that you were trying to get your TWIC and ran out of driving time, then ask him if he wants to escort you to a safe haven.

Wait time on the twic is 4-6 weeks but my company supposedly hired another company to take my trailer in unload and bring my trailer back out tom. Also unfortunately I'm on the east coast so no truck stops close and also have a qualcomm so can't just make the logs happen like some can.
