If you want to do it in a pickup and not get caught put an auxiliary tank in the bed that has a pump handle on it so it looks like a farm tank. Plumb it out under the floor of the bed, have a switch in your dash to pump out of the big tank, and run road diesel in your main tank in case you get dipped. That’s how most people do it anyways. I’d take the time to do that before I pack a 5 gallon can around on my truck all week to steal fuel from the company. It’s always better to screw the government than it is to screw your employer.

So when I report I have SEEN with my own eyes an IRS agent dip a fuel tank I take it you are calling me out as being untruthful?

With the fancy filler necks and anti-siphon devices on new light vehicles is it even possible to dip the tanks anymore? I was told they can swab the neck for dye residue. Any truth to that?

In the case of none CMVs I have never seen any such dipping. In my case I was referring to a company that bought about 1000 gallons of dyed fuel a month for loaders and other off road vehicles. The IRS agent walked outside after speaking to the owner for a few minutes and started dipping the fuel tanks of the CMVs around on the property. These new light vehicles I agree with you, I don't think they can be dipped.

I haven't seen a gas station in a while that sells dyed fuel to the public so I guess its not much of a concern. The average citizen is not likely to have a fuel card.

I've lost count of the number of times my tanks were dipped in MT... but all CMV.

One of our guys went braindead and forgot to fuel in the yard. He hauled a Cat up to a logging outfit in the woods and bummed twenty gallons of fuel from the loggers to get back to town.
    It was red fuel.
The shop guys said that the red dye permeated everything...filters, lines, valves, you name it and it had a tinge of red. We get checked occasionaly and don't like to take chances.
They flushed everything out but it would have actually been cheaper for me to haul 20 gallons of clear fuel up to the guy than the amount of shop hours that went into getting the red dye out of everything.

To be honest from roughly 2002 till my mom died in 2010 I spent most of my time looking for none dyed Kerosene for my moms heater. That red dye played havoc with those wicks. Off the top of my head even if I wanted red diesel I have no idea where to go to buy it retail today.

Today I think red diesel is mostly sold wholesale by fuel suppliers to large operations that use a lot of diesel off road. A ready mix plant I know of back in my hometown uses red diesel to fuel a heater that somehow helps them batch when it is very cold. For the most part I don't think many retailers fool with it anymore.
