Most drivers don't want to run teams, but, yes you can make good money running teams if you're with the right company. Old Dominion and Trimac are probably the best, moneywise, for new cdl grads right now that run teams. They're also good for solo drivers.
Trimac hired a team; two guys that are relatives, as soon as the graduated from cdl school.

Alright, thanks Chinatown, I’ll be sure to update here to let you know which company I get on with. I got my medical card and permit yesterday. Both of which were a lot easier to pass than I was expecting!

I start the CDL program next Monday and should be fully licensed by April 15 at the latest. I’m also trying to get some cash together to get a passport, T.W.I.C., hazmat, fingerprints, etc. I heard Trimac does a bit of Canada, so I’m hoping having everything will make me more hirable. It will probably cost over $500 for all this though,

    Chinatown Thanks this.

Well. You two are going to find a way to weld into a team. Im pretty sure you both will learn who does mornings, who does night owl. For example. Sometimes one who is better at backing would hop out and back the *&^% thing (Gonna cost you a coffee... later) in exchange for cooking breakfast on the move. It's teamwork.

Takes a few weeks to form a team once the trainers got through with each of you.

Now... I will say that a team which is running really well is one of the most powerful assets in any company. They WILL get the newest truck, THEY WILL get the pay, they WILL also be the 911. Dispatchers will say where is that team at? And boy howdy you two are in for it once you get a eyeful of what's the problem is. Or you might be leaving LA with 70 hours to be in Avenel NJ and cannot be late. The storms in winter etc don't matter. You will be there within 70 hours. 65 even better. And probably back in LA 3 days after that in the same 6 day week. With mileage like that the payroll takes care of itself. Some for you, some for the other driver and always without exception build savings.

When 9-11 happened, whatever money wife and I had on hand or could get to was it. The people in our payroll company was destroyed and that is that. When we will get paid again? Who knows. Maybe months. You do have savings to keep that medicine moving right? You need a comcheck? (You can almost hear the man on that end of the phone reaching for the bromo fixing to write a ginormous check....) We had savings. In addition to a house being rebuilt from storm damage that month. All of it cash. Our payroll got settled in about 7 weeks. That load of medicine to Linfield CT from Detriot for delivery morning of 9-13 was made for that area of the country with a whole lot of hurt people.

    Teaming is fun.

Also.. Teaming will make you two discover things about one another. I'll give a example. We had one where Nevada was nothing at all. 300 miles it seems of dirt and rock. Nothing. More dirt and rocks. bad ground too. Not much of a tree anything. Team mate had a problem with that. Emptied the mind. We pulled up near walker lake (At the now closed and mothballed west coast munitions storage hawthorne) and she said that's enough of that. So I broke the logbook, tore up the page and went ahead and got us into reno. If there was a problem with the law, I would have to make a correction to the paper logs before signing same so there was a little time to make it work. Oh officer I spilled my coffee that day, let me fix that. That coffee was something bad I tell you let's get a papertowel and get that dripping off your uniform.

Trust me those logs will be purty when he gets through chomping on nails about the dripping on his uniform...

    he he he.

Week two of CDL school completed.

Two weeks remaining till it’s complete and I take the skills test! It seems like the school just cares about teaching what’s required to pass the skills test and nothing else. It’s a for-profit school, sometimes 5 students to a truck. It is a 160 course with tons of “down” time, leaving early some days etc. I’m paying out of my pocket and they’re doing the bare minimum it seems. They continue to say “whatever company you work for will teach you” etc. lol

I’m trying to get some cash together to get my endorsements, passport, fingerprints, TWIC, etc. I’ve also been looking for a decent company. Seriously considering tanker since they pay well. Maybe superior, trimac, etc?

I’ll update further as I move along.

I completed the CDL program last Thursday. Last Friday I got my fingerprints done for the T.W.I.C. and Hazmat application and I applied for my passport.

I had my road test today and passed!:)

Now all that’s left is taking tests for hazmat, doubles/triples, tanker and this rookie will be able to hit the road!

    Congratulations.

Now get yourself hired on with a decent company and learn how to drive a truck.
