That sounds good in theory but can you imagine the economic ramifications of such a move? The price of everything would skyrocket.

Just as the market sets prices for attorneys, doctors, engineers, and every other professional career out there the market would set prices for the services. The most efficient carriers would prosper while the others wither and die.

This is what capitalism and competition is all about. The key is to get everyone on the same playing field with the SAME rules.

Take a look at our English and European counterparts. Their economies have survived and even flourished in the past while their truck drivers enjoy better wages, better benefits, and fewer hours during the week which allows them an actual family life. The global recession will make things tough on everyone for a while but we will bounce back.

I believe we have thousands of drivers here in the US who do the very same thing. The point is; "it is a the drivers choice to stay out that long."

I believe our European counterparts have more stringent hos rules than we do and a lower governed speed. I believe in many cases they get paid hourly or compensated for time stuck at customers or ports of entry.

I am not privy to their actual earnings per year but I do recall the trucking industry shutting down and paralyzing ports and roadways until their demands were met by the law makers.

except one small detail. Your cruising down the Hwy thinking how smart you are and how neatly tucked away you have your "other" log books when out of the blue some person or persons deside to get in front of your rig!!! Bam big accident!! Not your fault but lets say your still hurt. Your taken to the hospital, dot impounds the truck for a DOT inspection. During what they call a "inventory" search or logging all the equipment and belongings inside the truck the DOT officer finds your neatly tucked away "other" log books. Then you my friend are on your way to custody of the State! reguardless of whos fault, your going to jail. Think this will never happen? Think again. I had this happen, however I only had one log book. I was legal. Thank god my lines were current. I had just gotten loaded and was on my way when outta no where a drunk came down the Hwy the wrong way! I wont go into detail about the accident. The man was killed, I survived. Who do you think they were looking to put some blame on? I sure as heck have thought about the thousands of miles I have run not so "legal" Had I have been running Illegal I would be writing this from Penn state prison.
A few extra bucks in your pay check my friends is not worth life in prison!
You never know whats going to happen out here! YOU NEVER EVER KNOW!
I had 8 years without as much as a fender bender. In the blink of an eye my life changed!

That's a scary story man. that has been a recent topic at my job we usually run within the limit where a book isnt needed but have been stretching out the last few weeks some of the guys think they are doing a great job running wild 20-26hr days but with winter coming it only takes one idiot in their go anywhere minivan to ruin your day, week, life. These guys don't realise how serious these book laws are as most of them have never been otr drivers. I'm not perfect I bend the truth too and stories like yours are always in my head.

I get all of the concerns regarding a possible accident - But I don't know any man that sleeps 8 hours a night - I suppose a few do, and I have known a lot of women that say they "need the eight hours". But if I had to lay in a sleeper for eight hours, I'd be staring at the roof for four. I agree with some of the earlier posts - It is an individual thing. If I get a quick nap in the afternoon, I'm usually good for 16 hours or so. Somebody in Washington, D.C. knows how much rest I need ?:biggrin_25516:

Sorry, Arigo. Hours of service are federally mandated. Why are all logbooks exactly the same? There's not a California logbook, Or a Nevada logbook. If you were correct we would need 48 logbooks to run OTR!. Hours of service are 60 hours/7 days, or 70 hours/8 days. Short-haul regs state that the 14 hour period can be extended to 16 hours. Also, you are referring to on-duty time, that's different from drive-time which is 11 hours. Within a 100 mile radius (local driving) you are not required to keep a log because driving locally it is all but impossible to exceed the 11 hour drive time. Just read the back page of your 'California Logbook', you'll catch on.
