ill keep this short and sweet.
My truck has a GVWR of 14000lbs
My trailer has a GVWR of 15000lbs
Do i need a CDL to simply hook up and operate the truck and trailer? Even if i am hauling nothing at all?
Need a straight answer on GVWR

I met a hot shot f-250 driver yesterday at my delivery and asked him some questions.
To my surprise, he was an employee. His boss owned the truck and trailer.
2nd, he didn't have a CDL but he did have ELDs.
He had a tandem axle 40ft goose neck. He wasn't sure how much he could gross on his truck axle or trailer.
Basically, he depends on his boss to do him right.
He has to pay for fuel.
Weird stuff.Blackshack46 Thanks this. -
I just got confused with the GVWR
Always thought a combined GVWR, “meaning truck and trailer could not exceed 26,000 pounds “. (GVWR) -
Your gvwr is 29000#. It dosen't go by how much weight you haul but how much weight it is rated for. Any combination over 26000# or a trailer over 10000# requires a class a cdl.
Class A: Any combination of vehicles which has a gross combination weight rating or gross combination weight of 11,794 kilograms or more (26,001 pounds or more) whichever is greater, inclusive of a towed unit(s) with a gross vehicle weight rating or gross vehicle weight of more than 4,536 kilograms (10,000 pounds) whichever is greater.x1Heavy, Expeditor, shogun and 1 other person Thank this. -
I would say yes. Had a friend that had a box truck rated at 33K, she had it registered for 26K , to stay under CDL. She got stopped in OH and was told she needed CDL because truck was RATED for 33K. She was told she could be arrested for driving a CDL truck without CDL. She was not arrested but could not drive the truck away without a CDL driver. She eventually got her CDL and registered the truck with IRP max 33K.

Yes, It's not what you weight, it's what you are capable of weighing.
