So this gray truck is pretty much finished up, just getting some little touch ups and should be on the road next week.
Since it had bad crankshaft and block, we had to replace everything. Today while I was installing ELD on it, my mechanic got an idea to call Cummins and check serial number of the new bock. The block has Feb 1999 build date!
So I am not sure what to do now. Since it's a 99 engine (truck is 2003), looks like it can run without ELD? I wonder if I'll get harrased by DOT for it

    Bakerman Thanks this.

Oh hell. You got a pre 2000 engine? I hope you don't get writer's cramp. Paper logs for you!

Here's what you should do: Get a screen print of the cummins system showing the engine build date. Laminate that paper. It's proof that you dont need eld.

Wrt to writers cramp, skip that. Get keep trucking "ELECTRONIC LOG BOOK" a.k.a non-connected elog, and record away. That's what I do. Then print wirelessly from smartphone to regular laser printer <--- I can tell u the printer model I have.

Remember, FMCSA never said u use JJ Keller paper. so hey, paperlog, is paperlog

BTW, can you tell me what bumper part # that is? Ive been wanting to add a "big bumper" to my 1998 VNL

    Lepton1 and DUNE-T Thank this.

Your truck is a 2003 so really what you are doing is illegal. If it was a glider kit that had an older motor installed you'd be fine. But you can't just put an older motor into a newer truck that wasn't originally sold as a glider. You can't put older emmissions engines into trucks than what was originally installed from the factory. I mean people do it all the time but there are some pretty serious fines for it if you or the shop who did it were ever caught, which is highly unlikely, but you never know. You're in a very grey area here having a 99 motor in an 03 truck like that. You won't be able to register the truck as a 1999 and I suspect the DOT will likely write you a ticket for not complying with the EOBR mandate. If I were going to re-do an older truck there is no way I would buy one newer than a 1999. Not under any circumstance. Not even a 2000 that had a factory motor that was tagged as a 1999. Just asking for trouble, even though you may prove out to be right, you will likely have to spend time and money clearing your name.

This 2003 had the same N14 as 1999, same emissions, I am not doing anything illegal. It was one of the last batch they made at the end of 2002
