Most trucks have a diagram of the gear positions either on the shift knob or a small placard on the dash directly in front of the shifter.

The first time I cross the box and get into 5th high (*Which is the low in low range) the truck's behavior will tell me for sure if that was a good or bad idea...
To be fair. There is a metal transmission plate stamped with dots and numbers in black and white somewhere in the cab. THAT is what you go by. -
