Had a phone call from the regional manager today and talked with him about a dedicated and an LTL position both out of Charlotte, NC. I have never done linehaul but that's probably the way I'm leaning. That trip would take me to Atlanta and back and then hit 3/4 local stops in the Charlotte area. The pay is hourly and he said I would come in at top pay which he said was $22.35/hour. He said it was straight time for about an average of 50/55 hours per week. I'm currently making $21.25/hour working about 60 hours a week with time and a half at $31.87/hour. It's Monday-Friday with every other Saturday on. My question guys/girls is AAA Cooper a good move and a good way to get into linehaul? Thanks in advance for any information you can provide, it's most appreciated.

    Bob Dobalina Thanks this.

Really, it depends on you. I'm OTR, and I turned down an opportunity to work for these folks at night and go home every morning. AAA is a decent company, but driving all night and working the dock just didn't appeal to me.
Is your current job daytime? If it is, I'd stay there.

Current job varies on hours. Can start anywhere from midnight to 8am in the morning. We typically will run 10/12 per day, or early morning and be done for the day. When it rains we don't work but we're guaranteed 40 hours per week if we get washed out even if we only ended up working 15 hours total for said week.

Have you looked into Old Dominion, Estes, or Southeastern? Pay is extremely low in comparison and sounds like you'd be going backwards from where you are currently. Might be a good stepping stone to be more attractive to other LTLs in the future though. But I've always been against even sideways moves.

I never see their trucks, so they must be a regional outfit.

Yep, down south. They used to also have a terminal in Minneapolis, which was weird. That one has since closed down.

If one wants to work regional, I’d say Southeastern would be a considerably better option.

It closed because they tried to Union. My friend has been there out of Memphis and he told me. ALL drivers at AAA COOPER are basically COMBO DRIVERS. They all work the dock for a certain time and then drive a certain distance and back. My friend told me current top out if .60cpm in 18 months.

I'd recommend, ODFL, SEFL, DAYTON (Hard to get em),Estes. I know here at Estes I'm at .5985 in 6 months. I'll blow past my buddy in October lol. Only downside here is the trucks could be better. It's not even close with ODFL. I still don't know why Estes bought so many CRAP internationals.

Because Internationals were/are dirt cheap. Of course you get what you pay for. Those Internationals with the dog crap Maxxforce engines really turned a lot of companies off of International.

It's definitely the worse truck I've driven my entire career. I'm used to top of the line equipment with no real downtime because of the shop. My assigned truck is down so much I don't know when I'll even see it again. Went down in Minneapolis and that terminal has NO ANSWER FOR VOLVO. All of their trucks are crap international and crap very small kw
