Some states are duty to inform . Some aren't

If they ask I believe you're required to tell truth

I have only had to declare my pistol once. Went into a NASA facility in Utah. Showed them my badge and ID and they stored my weapon while I was on the property. Also stored my digital camera and iphone. Gave it all back to me when I left. No questions asked.

I pulled it on a gangster in Detroit once and he ran away and called the cops. They came over and were very polite and asked if I had done that. I showed them my retired LEO badge and ID card and they said thanks and told me to be careful in their city. I told them I would be and that was that. The gangster wanted 50 bucks not to pry open my trailer doors. I told him all I had was 45 and pointed it at him from the drivers seat. Thats when he took off. Wild city that Detroit is....

It has happened to me and I told him the truth...one pocket knife and a large sheathed hunting knife. He told me to just not handle them while he was doing his inspection.
They only ask so they can manage the risk to themselves.

Most of those systems no longer work. They remain in place because nobody wants to take them, even for scrap metal, due to concerns about radiation.

Bear in mind if youre in a CMV,they can Search your rig without probable cause.Sir/Mam"I have a Buck knife tool for cutting bands/boxes.I have a CCW permit for a Glock 357 Sig in my sleeper. Its for protection.Reminds me of a time 25 years ago...I was in a jacked up Dodge Duster with loud exhaust.Anyway cop stopped me for No real reason...Just a "Fishing Expedition". I pulled you over for a defective muffler."No its a cherry bomb, sir Supposed to sound menacing"Heres the receipt from Western Auto from 2 months ago, where I bought it,and they welded it on its not defective.Went to Court 1st time continuance,2nd time,he didnt show they dismissed it.He kept asking me on 2 or 3 different times "Have you been deer hunting? Its Deer Season you know. No,havent went, dont plan on deer hunting. He was "fishing",(trying to get me to mention,a rifle or recent hunting trip). This would have gave him "Probable Cause" ,to search my trunk, for guns ,drugs etc. This was The WHOLE POINT of the traffic stop to begin with.Point is be Careful how you answer any Questions. And Yes,if youre Not in a Communist State(and have a CCW you can pack a pistol. Some states have Gun Free School Zones etc.If youre OTR it can be Challlenging to stay legal.Even the "Tire Thumper" you carry can be Construed as a Weapon (if it has the leather lanyard. Now its a "Billy Club:.Just saying

I remember they had some kind of "Sniffer System",up near a Weigh Station in Nebraska. It was supposed to indicate if you were hauling Hazmat illegaly..Without the Placards or Endorsement.
