Actually what he meant is that some of us didnt go to a school. I didnt. I literally studied for my written, passed it. 3 days later I did my road test in a day cab pulling a 30’ dry van. I never stepped foot inside a classroom.

I bought a study guide online, very inexpensive. And there was a company in the Dallas area that rented you the truck and trailer and a guy that knows the road test forwards and backwards. He took me through it all then at my scheduled appointment time the DPS tester gets in and away we went.

    luckyduo Thanks this.

Not born with but born into! My brother and I were cheap labor for the family truckin' business. The only school we ever went to was the school of " gettin' smacked in the back of the head when you did something stupid!" Lol! We were steering and gearing around the farm when we were tall enough to reach the pedals. I couldn't tell you how much grease and scrubbing trucks we went thru before we earned the privilege.

I basically did the same. Studied for the written and passed it all but the air brake part. I knew I won't need the air break piece. I already had a 1 ton and 3 car trailer to practice with for the driving part. Got some practice and failed the first time. Repeat about 4 weeks later and passed. I had my son, a CDL holder, go with me both times to the test site, but that's how I did here in the great state of Pennsylvania in February 2014.

A dually is indeed a Commercial Vehicle in CA according to the CA Vehicle Code 471. If he wants to do this commercially, he does need a Class A CDL. He can also take the DMV test in his dually with a car trailer, as long as it is in class. IE: the trailer has a GVWR of over 10k# *and/or* the GVCWR (combined ratings of truck/trailer) is over 26k#. He will have a restriction on his license for air brakes. And also for 5th wheel hitches (if he tests in a gooseneck) and for manual transmission (if he tests in an automatic).

BTW: I am teaching this very thing in Norcal in an affordable 2 day clinic. And there is another lady teaching them in the Fresno area.
